Anja gets a mental breakdown and is sent to a sanitorium to rest. She is accompanied by Vladek. The birth of Richieu may have been the trigger. -

Vladek is drafted into the Polish army and fights against the Germans. -

Vladek is taken as a prisoner of war and then sent into a POW camp and eventually to a labor camp. Several months later, he is released. -
A Son's Grief
Vladek's mother dies of cancer. -

Vladek returns after sneaking across the Poland-Germany border. -

Vladek's father is taken away and then dies in a gas chamber. -

Tosha kills herself and the children she is caring for to avoid the gas chambers. -

Nazis arrest Jewish leaders and close synagogues. Jews are then quarantined and forced to wear the yellow star of David. -

Sighet Jews are forced out of their homes and into little ghettos. -
Birkenau
Elie and his father spend their first night in camp. Summer guards then send them to Auschwitz. -
Auschwitz
Elie Wiesel and his family are sent to Auschwitz. -
The March
Elie and his father march the death march and Elie is tattooed A-7713 on his arm. -
Injury
Elie gets surgery in Auschwitz then boards open cattle cars to BUchenwald. -
Elie's Father
Elie's father dies due to dysentery and starvation. -
Dachau
Nazi soldiers and the Jews march to Dachau to avoid the Red Army. -
Buchenwald
The Buchenwald camp is liberated and Elie and other orphans are sent to France.
