Gestaposs raid SIghet
The jews were foced to confiscate their valubles and were forced to wear yellow stars. they were also forced into very small ghettos and crowded together in the streets with barbed wire fences. They were forced to leave Sighet and travel in the hot sun and were only allowed to bring what they could carry on their backs. -
Madame Schachter under pressure
she begans screaming that she sees a fire outside of the car where tyhey are reminded of what might happen to them. although there is no fire she scares many of the jews in the car. they eventually think she is crazy and she is tied up and gagged so that she can not scream. she continues here screaming every night while her son cries watching. -
arival at auschwitz
The first selection occurs and elie and his father are seperated from their sisterand mother which he will never see again, elie meets a prisoner who tells him to lie about his age to stay sway from the creametory. They see a pit for burning babies and adults and alie is horrified. in the barracks elies father is beaten by the kapo and they meet a realtive who wonders about his family. -
eliezers gold crown
There is a medical and dental inspection were elie is called to the dentist to have his gold crown removed. elie continues to postpone his dental appointment by many excuses but eventually the dentist is hung for illegally trading in gold teeth. elie keeps his gold tooth but it is later taken away. franek wants elies gold tooth and when he refuses to give it to him, franek beats his father he eventually gives up. -
prisoner hanging
During an air raid, two cauldrons of soup are left unattended. one man risks his life for that bowl of soup but he is shot and falls to the ground. a week later the nazis have another puplic hanging of another man who tried to steal something during the air raid and a child who was set to be involved in the ressistance. everyone watches as the child strangles. -
elie find idek in the barracks
elie witnesses idek taking advantage of a girl in the barracks and for punishment, idek publicly whips eliezer untill he loses consciousness. -
elie questions his faith
rosh hashanah is here and elie cannot find a way to worship god in this whole time of suffering and he does not understand how god could do this to them. This question of faith causes him to be alone at this time of celebration and decides to eat on yom kippur which is the traditional day of fasting -
selection
They undergo another selection where elie is seperated from his father and his father is said to be to weak to work and to be put to death. elie discovers that there was another selection and his father survived and he and his father are reunited and put back to work -
eliezers hospital visit
as winter arrives, prisoners began to suffer in the cold. elie's foot swells up and he is put to surgery. while he is in the hospital there is a rumor of the russian army arriving but before they can get there the germans decide to evacuate the camp -
eliezer's big decision
still not wanting to be seperated from his father, he had to make a decision to stay in the hospital or go with his father on the journey to another camp. while thinking that the jews in the hospital will be put to death after the evacuation, they choose to be evacuated with the others. after the war, he learns that he made the wrong decision and thouse who remained were freed shortly after. -
journey to buna
in the blizzard on the way to buna, anybody who stops running is shot by the ss zalman, a boy running alongside elie decides to stop running. while elie is malnourished, exhausted, and weakened by his injured foot, he forces himself to continue running only for his father -
elie and his father
while on the car, the germans are throwing the dead bodies off of the car and they go to take elies father but elie fights for him and proves he isn't died. The germans try to convince elie to give up on his father but he never loses hope. -
surviving the cold winter
elie and his father are keeping each other awake as falling asleep could be deadly. they are collapsed in a shed sitting in the cold snow barefoot and freezing. -
rabbi eliahou and his son
rabbi eliahou is searching for his son. throughout this whole thing father an son have always stuck together. eliezer tells thr rabbi that he has not seen his son but he saw him during the run. he had abandoned his father by running ahead when his father seemed like he would not survive. -
arriving at Gleiwitz
The last exhausted prisoner arrive at the gleiwitz camp, crushing everyone on the path to the barracks. eliezer and his father are thrown to the ground in the rush. In a fight for air he realizes he is on top of juliek and is crushing him. -
eleizers fight for life
in the rush for the barracks, he finds himself in danger of being crushed to death by the man lying on top of him. he finally gains some breath and call out for help and his father. all he hears is juliek playing violin. In the morning he finds juliek dead and his violin smashed -
german towns
as they pass through the german towns, osme of the locals through bread onto the cattle cars in order to watch the jews fight and kill each other for food just for there enjoyment. one night elie is strangled in his sleep but his father calls for help who rescues elie but then loses hope himself. -
fight to live
the journey to Buchenwald has fatally weakened his father. when they arrive eliezers father sits in the snow and refuses to move or sit up. he seems to have given up and is close to death. elie tries to convince him to move but he cannot and he has to leave his father when an air raid alert pushes everyone into the barracks -
death is near
eliezers father is close to death. the prisoners around him steal his food and beat him but gives his father water because he cant resist his fathers cries for help. they advise him to leave his father and concentrate on him and his survival. In the morning, eliezer finds his father has been taken to the creametory but he does not cry but feels relief. -
The end and freedom
with the american army close, the nazis decide to klll everyone left in the camp, but quickly there is an air raid that cause everyone to go inside and are soon freed and in search of food. he then spends the next few weeks in the hospital of food poisoning and for the first time since sighet he looked in the mirror and said he saw a corpse starring back at him
