    Jacques Cartier

    In 1534, Francois I (the king of France) sent Jaques Cartier on a voyage. Francois ordered Cartier to find 2 things:
    - A shipping route to the Orient to allow the French trades to import silk and other fine products to Europe
    - Precious gems and metals such as gold to make France rich
    In July, (3 weeks after their arrival) Cartier set up a large cross at Pointe- Penouille on the Gaspe Peninsula to show that the French have claimed the land.
  • Samuel de Champlain

    From 1603 to 1635, he has crossed the Atlantic Ocean many times and throughout all these voyages he has accomplished a lot such as:
    - Using his skills as a cartographer to provide detailed maps of the Atlantic coast, the waterways of the St. Lawrence River etc.
    - He had also found a settlement in Quebec City which was the first permanent settlement for the Europeans.
  • The Jesuit Priests

    In 1611, the first Jesuit Priests arrived in New France. They had 2 goals:
    - To spread the Roman Catholic religion to the First Nations peoples
    - To establish schools for boys
    They had established schools in some settlements and sent missionaries out to the First Nations.
  • The Ursuline Nuns come to Quebec

    In 1632 Marie Martin had a vision and believed that she was destined to convert the First Nations peoples to Christianity so in 1639, Marie and 2 other Ursuline nuns came to Quebec where they had established a convent. And because there were only schools for boys, the Ursuline nuns established convents and schools for girls in New France, which were both First Nations girls and daughters of settlers.
  • Francois de Laval

    Francois de Laval had first arrived at New France in 1659 and in 1674, he was appointed to be the first bishop in Quebec. One of his most important accomplishments was assembling the Seminary of Quebec in 1663. The Seminary of Quebec was a school to train men to become priests.
  • Jean Talon

    Jean Talon was an intendant from 1665-1668 and later, he was appointed again, from 1670-1672. In 1666, Talon conducted a census of the population.
    Some of his other accomplishments are:
    -Setting up the "Filles du roi" program
    -Increasing New France's trade with French colonies in the Caribbean
    -Organizing the building of sawmills, shipbuilding docks, a brewery and the fishery
  • The Fille du Roi

    The Filles du Roi had a fairly important role as to the expansion of New France. This is because they have helped New France develop the colony by providing stable famillies and without them, New France wouldn't have exoanded as quickly as it had.
  • The Seven Years' War Part 1

    This war started in 1756 and it happened all over th world but in North America, the war actually started in1758. During that year, the British had taken over Louisbourg and destroyed it's fortress that way, they have control over the St. Lawrence River. In July, General Wolfe sent 4000 soldiers to attack the Beauport shore but General Montcalm had knew that General Wolfe would do that so he put a strong defense force there. There, 440 British soldiers were killed or injured...
  • The Seven Years' War Part 2

    ...But the next time, General Wolfe made the French think that they were going to attack the Beauport shore again by putting observation ships to go near the shore as if observing the area. General Montcalm had fallen for the bait and sent more troops there because he knew that the attack would be there. As the French troups were waitiing there for the attack, General Wolfe had decided to attack Quebec instead and at night, him and 5000 troops arrived up the path to the Plains of Abraham...
  • Battle of The Plains of Abraham / The Seven Years' War Part 3

    Battle of The Plains of Abraham (also known as "Battle of Quebec") took place on September 13, 1759 where the British had attacked the French to capture Quebec. The British used the strategy of the "Thin Red Line" during the battle and this battle lasted for about 15 minutes. In the end, both General James Wolfe (British) and General Louis - Joseph de Montcalm died in the war.
  • The Treaty of Paris

    The Seven Years' War had ended in 1763 because the French and the British agreed to sign a peace treaty in Paris. The British and the French had given back some of the land that they had captured from each other but New France was not one of those pieces of land and New France had remained as a British colony.
