My Education Career

  • Period: to

    Gilmer High School

    Student at Gilmer High School
  • Period: to

    University of Georgia Take 1

I was a student at the University of Georgia where I studied Journalism with an emphasis in Public Relations. While I was at UGA, I wrote for the Red & Black, the student newspaper, and I quickly learned that I did not want to write for a newspaper anymore. I shifted my focus to Public Relations with an eye on working for a sports team.
  • Period: to

    University of Georgia Take 2

After my undergraduate studies at UGA, I stayed on for another year and a half to earn a Masters of Education in Sport Studies with emphasis in Communications and Business. For the last semester of the degree, I worked as an intern for a professional hockey team.
  • Period: to

    Gwinnett Gladiators

I guess this is kind of like Education experience since I was working for the hockey team as part of my degree. I enjoyed my time with the team, but I also saw the darker side of working for a sports team, and that darker side was ticket sales. It became clear to me that I had much more talent for working with the students that would often come to the games than for selling tickets, so I made a change yet again.
  • Period: to

    Columbus State University

After my time with the Gladiators, I made the decision to move into teaching based on having worked with children during my undergraduate days, some teaching assistant experience during that time, and the fact that half my family are teachers. To start teaching, I needed to get certified. Luckily I stumbled upon an ideal situation in that I found a program at Columbus State that allowed me to earn a Masters of Arts in Teaching with an emphasis in Language Arts Education while also teaching.
  • Period: to

    Pike County High School

I started my teaching career with expectation of being a long-term sub for a year, but a position opened up just before school started, so I began as a special education teacher for a year. My second year, I stepped in for a colleague who retired, and I taught Language Arts for a year, until budget cuts happened...
  • Period: to

    The Dark Times

Since I was out of a teaching job, I decided to move back home and help my sister open a restaurant. It turned out that while I'm a pretty good cook, it takes more than that to successfully run a restaurant, and we went out of business after six months. I then spent two solid months looking for a teaching job. And then...
  • Period: to

Supply Teacher at Durham Middle School

I finally found a position as a Supply Teacher (read long-term substitute) at Durham Middle School, and I got my introduction to teaching middle school. I taught special ed for a while in reading and ELA, and I taught gen ed Laguage Arts for a few weeks, and I picked up a little bit of everything else in between. All the while I looked for something else.
  • Period: to

    Simpson Middle School

When the 2010-11 school year ended, budgets dictated that a position was not available for me at Durham, so I had to move on. Again, I devoted my time to searching for a job, and I was finally rewarded with the opportunity to interview for a job at Simpson Middle School. I was offered a position as an EBD teacher, and I accepted with some apprehension. Luckily, fate intervened again, and I was later offered a position as a regular special ed teacher, which I happily accepted.
