After evading capture for a long time Vladek and Anja are finally captured trying to escape Poland by train. The smugglers they hired, in the end, reported them to german soldiers. -
Because of the impending USSR army, Auschwitz is evacuated to move the prisoners. After a grueling 200 mile march, Vladek gets on a boxcar train. Vladek makes a hammock out of his old blanket and this basically saves his life since the close quarters of the train make it difficult to survive. -
After being transported to another concentration camp, Vladek is finally saved by American forces. -
After being reunited Vladek and Anja travel from Poland to Sweden. -
Art is born in Stockholm, Sweden. At this time Vladek is working as partner at a department store. -
At 56 years old after countless years of depression and guilt, Anja takes her own life. Vladek and Art are devastated. -
At the age of 75 Vladek Spiegelman dies of congestive heart failure.
