At the special school, I made my first friend outside my family. I was twelve, he was sixteen. I was his first friend, too. We're still very close.

I went to high school on a military base in Germany. This is where I learned to navigate the special education system and began to understand the implications of my disability.

I participated in the academic games throughout high school. The structured socialization with my peers was pleasant and undemanding, My senior year we won the all-europe academic games, undefeated. I was named MVP. My autism was mentioned multiple times at that event, by both peers and adults, but never as a negative thing. It was a revelation.
