Media. Question 7.

  • Prelim over all

Overall i think we all worked well as a group when developing new idea's and different camera shots throughout. I also learnt new camera skills which will help when i film my OTS to my best ability. It was a basica way to introuduce us to the camera and different shots that we would need in future refrences.
  • Researched Thriller genre

At first we all had to research the Thriller genre through different websites, watching films and researching things on the internet. Films that helped were things such as se7en, Brick lane, Arlington Road and Shrooms. This gave us a brief idea what Thrillers are all about and what they consist on which we would need for future refrences.
This allowed us to begin forming ideas on the sorts of codes, conventions and themes typical of Thriller which all would help us when creating our OTS.
  • Prelim and working as a group of 3/4

As well as filming techniques, we also had to learn how to work in a group to see all our different quailites and what we were good at. As a group we would have to choose allocate certain roles to different people. The different roles were: Director, Cameraman and actress/actor. We decided to split these roles as a group an who had experience and what not, we did this efficently and it did work out well.
  • Filming the Prelim

Before starting this task as a group we had to grasp new concepts that we had to learn were the 180 degree rule (where you only film from the same side and see the other person in the shot you are talking to) match on action and shot reverse shot. i hadn't filmed these shots befofe but thought it was quite easy and simple to do, i also learnt how to make sure the camera was ready to film for example making sure the white balance was complete.
  • Forming out groups for OTS

We started planning our OTS by dividing a mind-map on our own into the different elements of a thriller film; antagonist, protagonist, equilibrium, disruption, beginning, middle, end, setting, props. We then as a group came together to see who had roughly the same idea's on what they would want to film on and what setting they would use.
We then put ourselves in groups of 3 and 4.
  • Planning our OTS

As we formed ourselves into a group we decided to briefly plan what idea's we had as a group. We made a massive mind map of different settings and props we would need and use to make our OTS as effective as we can to fit in a thriller genre, we also dissuced different music for the background and what family members would help us film. We did a lot of planning for this task as a group with a total of 4 different story boards etc.
  • working as a group

When organising the filming day we all worked on who would bring what and so on ect, we all made idea's and put them together so everything was everyones idea. This means their was a wider range of skills and idea's that we could all collect together rather than working by myself. We are all good friends and found it easy to express our idea's.
  • Filming

On our filming day we all met together at 9am so we could get an early start so we could use the whole day. We made sure to use the 180degree rule and the make sure the white balance was intact. We decided to use the woods so we went to a variation of places placed in the woods which would link to our OTS. The director was very admant that we do the job right so we were under strict regulations with the camera man taking more shots than we orginally needed.
  • Editing.

I found out that editing the Premil exercise was a lot more easier than editing our OTS as there were less shots and we were using less effects to make our thriller OTS to the best of our ability. As we used different effects it took us a week or two to finish the final editing and we were all very happy with that we had produced. We used high contrast to make it though as Pearl was hiding against her future.
  • Overall.

Overall my skills have got much better as im learning to do new things such as filming a dutch tilt etc. I have learnt how to cooperate patiently whithin a group and be open to new ideas and to make something out of it. I also learnt to use new software making my coursework look more presentable when it is being marked. I am also now more aware of film companies and production/ disdribution. I have also made sure i will attend a film festival as it will help me with skills in A2.
