Vladek receives a letter from the government which is a draft notice. He leaves Anja to fight in the war against Germany and Anja and Richieu go to the sosnowies. This event is a turning point in the story because he has to leave his family and fight in the war where he might die. This event makes Vladek seem very scared. In the pictures he looks very scared and nervous. This event makes his family very worried and scared. This relates to the theme because sadly he has to leave his family.

Vladek is in some trenches by a river shooting at the Nazis until he is caught. He talks to them in german which stops him from being beaten and he is taken as a prisoner of war. This was a turning point because he might die in the camp and his poor family is probably just at home praying. This relates to the theme because he got caught fighting for his country and his poor family didn't even know.

In September of 1939 Poland surrenders to Germany and Vladek is supposed to go back to Sosnowiec to his wife and kid, but they passed it and he is sent to Lublin. This is a turning point because he was supposed to go back home with his family but instead he is sent to Lublin. This relates to the theme because his family was probably expecting him to go back home but instead he is sent somewhere else.

All of the Jews are living in the Ghetto and Vladek's friend Miloch got a bunker for himself, his family, and Vladek and his family. This has a positive impact on the characters because it gives them hope that they will survive. This event relates to the theme because Vladek tries to get everyone to go with him which really shows his value of family.

Vladek's parents get deported to Auschwitz where they are killed by the Nazis. This is a turning point in the story because his parents die. This event had a negative impact on Vladek because his parents who he really cared about died. This relates to the theme because Vladek really cares about family and this sad event where he loses his parents really connects to the family theme.

In May of 1945 Germany surrenders to the US. Vladek is sent to a US displaced persons camp in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and then he goes to Sosnowiec to meet Anja. This is a turning point because he is finally freed and he gets to see his family again. This relates to the theme of family because right after he is freed he goes to see his family again.
