Vladek and his father-in-law's household gets relocated to the Stara Sosnowiec Quarter. This was a turning point as they move into a smaller less luxurious place. This is relevant to the theme as even though they are downgrading from their old house.

Vladek goes into hiding with Anja, first with Mrs. Kowka, then with Mrs. Motonowa. This is character development as Vladek becomes grateful that they are still alive, even with rats walking over them. This is relevant to the theme as Vladek is still positive even though their living conditions are horrible.

Vladek is sent to Auschwitz along with Anja. This is a turning point as he knows where this is and what happens in Auschwitz. (The month and the day are not completely accurate.) This is relevant to the theme as Vladek knew what was happening, yet Vladek made sure not to scream or cry.
