    Mao was born into a peasent family in the farm town of Shaoshan, Hunan, China. His father Mao Zedong, a successful grain dealer, and his mother Wen Qimei were better of then other familys with a three acre farm and was able to send Mao to school at 8.     When Mao Ze Dong graduated from Hunan First Normal School he became a certified teacher. He then went to Bejing looking for a job but was unsuccessful. He eventually was able to find a job as a library assistant at Bejing University, where he heard about the Russian Revolution.     When chinese president Sun Yat-sen died, Chiang Kai-shek became the chairman of the Kuomintang. He then broke alliance and began killing or jailing many of the Communists. Mao Ze Dong lead a army of peasants against the Kuomintang but lost. For the next year, 100,000 Communists traveled 8,000 miles west and north to Yanan (only 30,000 survived the journey) .     Germany's Hitler invaded Poland in 1939 begining WWII. He then invaded Denmark, Norway, Belguim, the Netherlands, and France which all were conquered relativly quickly. Hiter began the mass extermination of Jewish people, killing over 5 million Jews. In June 1944 Brittish and American forces began D-Day landing in France and closing in on Germany by 1945. In May of 1945 Germany surrendered.

    Tension between the United States and the Soviet Union arose after the end of WWII. The two superpowers compeated with eachother over educational, military, and technological things. The United States disliked the Communism in the Soviet Union and the Soviet Union disliked how the U.S didnt recongnize their country as a part of the internatonal community and their late entry into WWII. The cold war ended with the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991

    Hundred Flowers Campaign
    This is a name for a period of time in China when Mao told its citizens to openly express their opinions about the Communist Party of China. When mao received bad critisim he turned the campaign into a 'Anti-Rightist' purge. 300,000-550,000 thousand people were then labeled 'Rightests' (people who spoke badly of the chinese government) and were ethier discredited, lost their jobs, or sent to labor camps. Mao claimed it was a plan to catch these people in the act.

    The Soviet Union was the first nation on Earth to launch a artificial satellite, and they named it Sputnik I. Sputnik was a huge devlepment in technology. This also had a large impact on the Cold War, scaring the Americans because they thought that this meant the Soviets could launch a deadly missle that could reach the U.S. It also jump started the American project for space exploration and led to the creation of NASA.

    The Great Leap Forward was Mao's plan to help modernize Chinas economy. He planned to develop agriculture and industry. Mao Ze Dong set up communes to produce what was needed. The communes produced even more then what was needed but members, fell asleep on the job and most of the products quality was terrible.     The U-2 incident occured during the Cold War when the U.S took out a secret mission to take pictures of Soviet territory by flying over the Soviet Union in a spy plane. The plane and CIA pilot, Francis Gray Powers, was shot down by a Soviet air missle on the morning of May 1st, 1960.

    During the Cultural Revolution Mao wanted to get rid of the 'undesirables' . He formed his followers into the Red Guards and shut down China's schools so that he wouldnt get any rejection. The young intellectuals who lived in the city were sent to labor camps. Throughout the revoultion, China's cultural heritage was lost and choas in economics and social insued.

    Americans Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin Aldrin were the first humans to set foot on the moon. Planners at NASA studied the moon for two years to find the best place for the landing. This place needed few high cliffs and a flat surface. Apollo 11 took off from Kennedy Space Station on July 16, 1969 and televised it to all Americans. The lunar module the "Eagle" hit the Sea of Tranquility on July 20th, 1969.
