    The Adams Onis Treaty was sometimes referred to as The Florida Treaty. It fixed the western boundary of the Louisiana Purchase as beginning at the mouth of the Sabine River and running along its south and west bank to the 32 parallel and then directy towards the Red River.

    President Polk had been planning on declaring war against Mexico for almost a week. He sends a war message to Congress on the first working day after hearing of the sixteen American casualties near the Rio Grande in Texas. The House was allowed 2 hours to debate the bill. It gets passed.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
    This treaty was officially titled The Treaty of Peace, Friendship, Limits, and Settlement between the United States of America and the Mexican Republic. The treaty was signed on February 2, 1848, in the Villa of Guadalupe Hidalgo between the U.S. and Mexico that ended the Meican-Amercian War.
  • Free Soil Party

    Free Soil Party
    Anti-slavery members of the Whig and Liberty parties join to form the Free Soil Party. This party opposes the expansion of slavery into the newly acquired western territories. The party nominates Martin Van Buren as its candidate in the 1848 election; Van Buren wins, then splitting the Democratic base and facilitating the election of Mexican-American War hero and Whig candidate Zachary Taylor to the presidency.
