    Napoleon's Invasion of Russia
    Napoleon and Tsar Alexander I were allies- when Alexander refused to continue to help Napoleon with the blockade of British ships, Napoleon attacked Russia. Napoleon arrived with about 200,000 troops, the troops ransacked the country as they forged their way to Moscow- killing game, destroying crops, and mudering villagers. When they reached Moscow, they destroyed what they could before they were forced to retreat. The cost on Russia was great.

  • Russo-Japanese War

    Russo-Japanese War
    The goal of the Russo-Japanese War was to rally support and patriotism from the cizitens of Russia, however, the war had an adverse effect on Russia. The war was fought on the opposite side of the country from the fighting, therefore the news was slow to reach St.Petersburg. The Russians suffered defeat after defeat before the eventual development of a peace-treaty. Yet, there still existed a seperation between the people and rulers.

    As an ally to Serbia, Russia entered the war at their request. Whitin two months, Germany had declared war on Russia. By September of the next year, Tsar Nicholas had taken control of the Russian Army. In December 1916- Rasputin, advisor to the Tsarina, was murdered. In March 15 1917- Nicholas abdicated and a Provisional government is declared. July 1st of the same year, Russia suffered a great defeat at Galicia. (continued on next event.)

    World War I part 2
    On Novemeber 7, 1917, the Bolsheviks' overthrew the Romanovs. December 3- Trotsky, representing Russia, signs an armistice with Germany. The family of Tsar Nicholas was murdered July 16, 1918 by the Bolsheviks. Throughout 1918-1921 there were several attempts to unseat the Bolsheviks- all failed. Soon the Allies decide to intervene in Russia. In 1921 the Russian Civil War ends after three years with Bolsheviks, led by Lenin and Trotsky, in full control.

    During the beginning of the War, Hitler attacked Russia several times, claiming a hatred of Russia. Eventually, after several attacks, in August 1931, Russia and the Nazis signed a peace treaty which lasted for ten years, though Russia contained many Jews. In 1941, Hitler sent three seperate forces to Russia- one to Stalingrad, one to Leningrad, and one to Moscow. Russia fell to the onslaught. (continued on next slide.)

    As the Russians retreated, they destroyed anything that the Nazis could use in their persuing. The Germans were not prepared for the cold Russian winters, and their tanks and other machinery was frozen. However, the Russian Army was murdering their citizens, and while two-thirds of the German army were fighting with Russia, the Allies won the war. Yet, many Russians fled the country and many more were kllled. The country was ripped apart.

    There was an exreme tension between the USSR and America; at the end of the war, the Red Soviet army was teh first to enter Berlin- with Eisenhower''s permission.There was never any actual war between America and the USSR, however, the two countries were the cause of several smaller wars throughout the Cold War. Russia and America were opposites in every way; Russia- Communist with a dictator, and America- Capitalist with a democracy. (next slide)

    At the beginning of the year, Fidel Castro gained control of Cuba, and within the year, they became allies with Russia. In June of 1962, Khrushchev and Kennedy held a summit in Vienna. Within two monthes there were reports of Soviet Missiles in Cuba. There was a meeting arranged in October, 1962. Later, Russia agrees to remove the missiles only if the US removes missiles from Turkey. On Oct 28, 1962, Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles.

    Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan
    Russian troops landed in Kabal. The Russians claimed to be in the country to help them with their civil war. Russians shot Amin, the leader, and replaced him with Babrak Kamal. The Russians were forced to stay and keep him in power, By 1982, the Rebels had claimed 75% of the country. There were peace talks for the withdrawal of the Russian troops, vetoed by Russia. Finally Gorbachev pulled back the troops in the late 1980's.

    Wars with Chechnya
    After the Soviet break-up in 1991, Chechnya declared independence. Russia did not agree with this, and they tried to reclain Chechnya. After many bombings- lasting from 1994 through 2007 and included the formation of the Chechnya Rebels- Russia finally admitted defeat. (During 9/11, Russia claimed the bombings were part of the war on terrorism.) In 2008, stability returned to Russia.

    Russia's War with Georgia
    On the morning of August 7, Georgia invaded Ossetia and captured several cities. Russian peacekeeping troops tried to intervene. Soon Americans and Isralis wer coming in to defend the peace. Russia slowly conquered Georgia, using bombs and destroying as they went. Russia made several attepmts to contact the United States, and they eventually peace talks were started. The war is not over yet.
