Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

  • Research Thriller task

    Research Thriller task
Everyone in our media class was asked to research and produce a PowerPoint on the thriller genre. This PowerPoint included the typical features of the thrilller genre. We explained the codes and conventions a thriller film would include, the typical and iconographic mise en scene; the typical characters used and narrative themes. This research task gave us a better understanding of the thriller genre for our opening title sequence.
  • Began Our Premliminary Task

    Began Our Premliminary Task
The class was split into 5 groups- A-E. My group was E. We were then asked to plan our preliminary exercise, this included discussing our initial ideas and creating a storyboard that included all the different shots we were going to use. For this task we had to learn how to use the 180 degree rule, shot reverse shot and Match on action and then use them in our preliminary task for a continuity effect. We then filmed the prelim and edited it when we were finished.
  • Research Task 2

    Research Task 2
Once we had completed our preliminary task and uploaded it to youtube we were asked to produce our second research task which was to evaluate our preliminary exercise and think about what we could improve on for our opening title sequence. Since doing the preliminary task I feel that my group have developed our skills in cinematography and editing especially.
  • Research Task 3

    Research Task 3
In order to prepare for creating our own opening title sequence we had a few lessons on learning the meaning behind what they do in films for example in drive ‘Driver’ wears a jacket with a scorpion on the back to show he is dangerous. We were then given the task to look at 3 different opening title sequence and analyse them to help give us ideas for our own opening title sequence.
  • Planning Our OTS

    Planning Our OTS
We were then asked to plan our own opening title sequence; we needed to thinking of a narrative for our film, then think about how we could show that in an opening. In order to do this we produced a storyboard, a shooting schedule, a shot list etc. Once this was finished all the groups were asked to stand up in front of our class mates and pitch our movie idea as they would in real production lines. However, our group did not get to do this as members of our group had illness or were away etc.
  • Initial Filming

    Initial Filming
We were given the afternoon to go and film for our opening title sequence; we had planned to go to the pier and film the scene where Tabitha goes missing. When we got there we realised we needed to ask permission to film there and sign to say what we were doing with the footage. We did this and got all the shots we wanted.
  • Editing Stage

    Editing Stage
When we got into the editing suites we put all of our footage on our assigned computer. We looked at all the clips we had shot and we were not happy with how it had turned out the shots were dull and you couldn’t really hear what the characters were saying. We then made the decision to reshoot in a different location.
  • Reshoot

    Reshoot
We then decided to plan properly exactly what shots we wanted and planned a time schedule as we needed to get it right this time. We decided to shoot at Hollingbury Park as it is quiet and secluded area for a suspicious disappearance of a child. The filming on this day went really well as we were all focused on what we were supposed to be doing and got everything we needed.
  • Initial Editing

    Initial Editing
We then got back in the editing suites; we looked at the shots we got and logged them green, amber and red to mark how good they were for example the green shots were good and we would use, amber was the ones we could use but maybe avoid it and then red were just unusable. We then produced a rough cut of our opening title sequence. We were much happier with these shots. I was the editor for my group so I spent most of my time in the editing suites putting together all our shots and editing them
  • Sound Effects

    Sound Effects
Once we I had pieced together all of our shots we needed to add sound effects to it; Sonam was in charge of this and he gave me the soundtrack ‘Day of Chaos’ to be our constant soundtrack. We also got SFX for the swing, Sarahs reaction, rain etc.
  • Titles

    Titles
I then had to begin to add titles into our opening title sequence I found this quite challenging initially but once I got the hang of it I was fine. Remy chose the font ‘fluoxetine’ to be the font for our titles and credits. As our opening title sequence came to only 1.11 minutes I had to put the titles as separate shots as opposed to just putting them in the background of our film to ensure we had filled the allocated time.
  • Export and Upload to Youtube

    Export and Upload to Youtube
Stu helped us export our opening title sequence as we were unsure of how to do it. Once we had done this our final task was to upload our sequence to YouTube. This was a simple task and didn’t take very long. I feel I have learnt a lot by being the editor for our sequence as I had never used a program like adobe premiere so I feel like I have developed my knowledge and skill at editing.
  • Evaluate

    Evaluate
Once we had finished producing our opening title sequence we were asked to answer some questions on our OTS. Overall I feel I have learnt a lot about how to work in a group and not to sit back and let everyone else take control of the work and actually take control. Editing gave me the chance to learn how the programs work and how to use them. I am happy with what we have produced but I do feel that if we had more time we could have produced something better but that’s the same with any project.
