Starting school, I didn't speak one word of English. Alhough I was born here my parents only spoke Spanish therefore I only spoke Spanish. I quickly learned and was able to be read at grade level most of my Elementary Education.

Learning what sounds letters in the alaphabet make.

Learning to form sentences with my exer expanding vocabulary. I learned we learn about 500,000 words between birth and kindergarden. So making sentences with the words I know was a great literacy moment for me.

During the 4th grade in Queens, NY.a predominately hispanic community were students spoke spanish during school affected me by causing some confusin and had me speaking spanglish, which just means mixing spanish and english words.

Moving from New York to Maryland, was a huge adjustement for me. Moving from a community of minorities to a community were there were only 2 hispanic students in the whole fifth grade affected my proficency in a drastic way. I was not speaking spanish at all in school.

High school was a essential for my literacy progresion. High school prepares you for college. In all subjects but spesifically literacy. We learn how to write papers. We learn proper ways to begin an essay and end one.
