Samuel Champlain was a geographer for King Henry IV. He traveled in his earliest with his uncle and ventured as far as Spain and West Indies.

He joined François Gravé Du Pont's expedition to Canada. They sailed up rivers and ultimately arriving in Montreal. He proved his mettle by making predictions about the networks of lakes and other features of the regions.

The team of them sailed down the coast of New England as far south as Cape Cod. Champlain was the fist to give a precise and accounting the region that would one day soon be Plymouth Rock.

Champlain was named Lieutenant to de Monts. They set off on another expedition up the St. Lawrence. They had arrived in June and built the City of Quebec. It was a hub for french fur trading. He had fought the first major battle against the Iroquois.

He made a brave voyage into the interior of Canada that is claimed by a tribe of Native Americans who had a good relationship with the Hurons. The french and Hurons combined and attack the Iroquois, but lost the battle and Champlain was hit in the knee. They lived with the Hurons that winter between a bay and a lake.

After he returned to France he spent his time writing stories of voyages completing them with maps and illustration. Louis XIII's chief minister Cardinal de Richelieu, placed Champlain in charge of ruling New France.

Things didn't go smoothly for Champlains charge. He was eager to capitalize the fur trade in the region. Charles I of England had an expedition under David Kirke to displace the french. The fort was attacked and seized supply ships also cutting off necessities to the colony. Champlain had to surrender on July 19th, 1629.

The British and the French signed the Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, returning to Quebec to the French. Champlain returned to be its governor.

By the time his health was failing and was forced to retire in 1633. He died in Quebec on Christmas day in 1635. It is surprising that how famous he was no one had a fight with him and he died but it was just his health.
