  • Triple Alliance formed

    Germany, Austro-Hungary and Italy began an alliance that meant they would support eachother during wars. THis became effective in WWI.
  • Triple Entente formed

    Russia, France and Britain joined to form an alliance that meant they had to support each other during wars. This was effective during WWI
  • Archduke is murdered

    The Archduke of Austro Hungary Franz Ferdinand is assassinated by a Bosnian Serb while he is in Bosnia. This angers the people of Austro Hungary as he was heir to the throne.
  • Austro Hungary present ultimatum to Serbia

    Austro Hungary present Serbia with an ultimatum with demands that it wants Serbia to meet. Serbia can not meet all of the demands.
  • Austro Hungary declare war on Serbia

    After Serbia failed to meet with Austro Hungary's demands Austro Hungary declared war on Serbia.
  • Russia moves to support Serbia

    Russia had pledged allegiance to Serbia so when they found out that Austro Hungary had declared war, they moved troops to support Serbia.
  • Germany declare war on France

    Germany figured it had two enemies that it wanted to defeat. France and Russia but the Germans knew that they couldn't defeat both at once.They came up with the Schlieffen plan where they believed it would take 6 weeks for the Russians to prepare for war and during this time the Germans would defeat France.
  • Germany invade Belgium

    Germany decided that it would be quicker and more efficient if instead of directly attacking France they went around the back and caught them off guard. This meant that they would have to move through Belgium.
  • Britain declare war on Germany

    Britain declared war on Germany when they heard of the invasion in neutral country Belgium. Because the British Empire entered the war several other countries who were part of the empire had to join the war. This included Australia and New Zealand.
  • Britain and France declare war on Austro Hungary

    Britain and France declare war on Austro-Hungary and the war is now in full swing with many countries supporting alliances.
