    Giuseppe Mazzini, the founder of Italy, seized the Papal States during the February Revolution of 1848. He then took over the Roman Republic. He is often referred as the soul of unification.

    Cavour teams up with Napoleon III of France to fight the Austrians in the Austro-Sardinian War.
  • Garibaldi, the Sword of Unification

    Garibaldi was a friend of Mazzini, defended Mazzinis Roman Republic against French. Also conquered the Two Siciles in 1860
  • The Duchies

    People from Parma, Modena, and Tuscany drove out pro-Austrian rulers, and ten voted to annex Sardinia-Piedmont.

    German government request for military funds was defeated in the Prussian Legislature

  • Austro-Prussian War

    Prussians allied with Italians, and they wanted the Italian-inhabited territory back. It was held by Austria. The Prussian army invaded Austria to get back their land.
  • Franco-Prussian War

    Bismarck wanted a war with the French, so they could merge into a Prussian controlled unified Germany. Napoleon III declared war on Prussia, which was joined by the four german states.
