Whitney's Idea
Whitney told a story that the idea for the Cotton Gin came from watching a cat try to pull a chicken through a fence and only getting feathers. The device separates seeds from cotton by pulling cotton "feathers" through a mesh "fence", while leaving the cotton seed "chickens". -
Whitney Is Granted Patent
Eli Whitney Gets aplied for a patent on October 8th of the previous year. It was Granted on this date but it was not validateed until 1807. -
Whitney's Gin
Whitney's gin seperated the seeds from cotton fibers. The seeds could be used for replanting or for oil. -

Impacts
The Gin was great for plantation owners because they made money, but it was ot great for people in the cities because of one thing, slavery. It was on the decline before the gin, and began increasing after it. Because of this, many people say the Gin is an important, if accidental, cause of the civil war. -
Modern Gin
Because of patrent infringement of the first Gin, many companies had their own. With todays modern innovations, The machines use computers and technology to get the job done faster. The modern machines do still have the chicken- fence methoods that made their ancestors usefull
