    James Watt invented the steam engine.The steam engine is able to harness the energy of steam to move machinery. Steam engines were used to great effect to run locomotives and steamships. The steam engine was central to the the industrial revolution. Only through providing a convenient source of energy could major forms of transportation grow and prosper. Steamships and steam locomotives allowed for the quicker transportation of raw materials that could be used to produce finished goods.

    Samuel SLator invented factory systems. All steps of manufactoring occured in one location. Factory systems were built near water and mostly in New England.Factering systems brpught machines and workers under one roof. They increased growth of cities , job opportunities, and clothing industry.
  • Cotton Gin

    The cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney. The cotton gin is a machine designed to remove cotton from its seeds. It was invented during the Industrial Revolution. The cotton gin made the cotton industry of the South explode. Previous to its invention, separating cotton fibers from its seeds was a laborious, intensive, and unprofitable venture. After the invention of the cotton gin, cloth was more available and cheaper. Unfortunately, the invention also needed more slaves to man it.

    Interchangeabe parts were invented by Eli Whitney. Replacement pieces of exact specifications. Parts that are exactly alike. Production became faster, repairs easier and cheaper. It decreased need for skilled labor.

    National roads were invented by Albert Gallatin. He wanted to build a road from Maryland to Virginia that won't turn to mud when it rains. Allowed people to move around the country easier-aided in settling in the west. It improved the nation's economy. National roads improved the nation's economy by making it more economical (cheaper) to move farm goods to markets.

    Robert Fulton invented the steamboat, a boat powered by steam engines rather than water wheels. Steamboats inproved the nations economy. It made transportation on rivers more efficient. Cities developed because people and goods can get to remote areas.
  • Erie Canals

    Canals were invented by John Calhoun. His goal was to dig canals between major rivers and lakes. Canals improved the nations economy. It was more economical (cheaper) to move farm goods to market. It made westward expansion easier. The first major canal was the Erie Canal.
  • Lowell Mills

    Francis Cabot Lowell invented the Lowell Mills. Girls came to work in 12 hour shifts and lived in boarding homes. It increased job opportunities for young, unmarried women. It gave a chance for educatio but it put some workers in danger.

    John Deere invented the steel plow, a light weight plow with a asturdy steel blade designed for heavier soils. Plowing farms became much faster and easier, increased farming production and expansion of farms into the midwest US.

    The telegraph was invented by Samuel F. B. Morse. The machine was used to communicate by tapping out codes that could be translated. People can communicate over lond distances. It connected regions of the country.

    Elias Howe invented the spinnning jenny. The machine was used to weave clothe and sew clothing. It increased clothing industry production and increased a need for cotton.
  • Transcontinental Railroad

    Transcontinental Railroad
    The Central Pacific Railroad and Union Pacific Railroad came up with the transontinental railroad. It was a railroad that conneted the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts. It improved transportation as goods and people would be connected as they moved west.
