On December 2, 1823 President James Monroe declared that Europe must not interfere with the United States' sphere of influence. -
Treaty of Kanagawa
This treaty between the United States and Japan opened the Kanagawa port, and therefore Japan, to trade between the two. -
Start of the first of the Opium War
On January 14, 1840, the Qin Emporer demanded that all material assistence to Britain must be stopped. This lead to a naval war against Britain, which the Chinese naval forces got crushed by, ending the war around 1842. -
Suez Canal Completed
In 1854, Ferdinand de Lesseps got support from the leader of Egypt to create a compant to make a canal open to ships of all nations. A little over 10 years later, and many thousands of laborer deaths later as well, the Supex canal was built to connect the Mediteranean to the Red Sea. -
Open Door Policy
Proposed by the United States, made all countries trading with China have equal privelages so no one could be blocked from it, hence the name "Open Door". -
Roosevelt Corollary
An addition to the Monroe Doctrine, the Rossevelt Corollary says that the United States will intervene between Europe and Latin America to enforce legitimate claims of the European powers, rather than having Europe claim directly. -
Panama Canal Opens
On August 15, 1914, the Panama Canal opened with 1,000 ships traveling through it during the first year. This engineering marvel created a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, avoiding the dangerous waters around Cape Horn.
