    Kanae Maede leaves to America from Japan after her parents died, so that she can be with her two older brothers. The Gentlemen's Act will make her immigration process easier. Kanae will board the boat in first class because her brothers discovered that first class people won't get detained like they did in Angel Island. Kanae is looking forward to moving, she wants to attend a good school, and get educated.

    When entering the upper half of the Pacific Ocean the ocean wave's were getting harsher, along with the weather. I became sick and tired, but gladly I was put into first class because my brothers new the importance of being in first class.

    I went by easily and I didn't even have to go through the inspection, but I saw the process and the line was huge. They inspected a person's cough, eyes, and feet. There wasn't any Japanese men coming to America because of Gentlemen's Act which restricted male Japanese workers, but it gave more reason for non-japanese laborers like wives and children to come. to When I finally, officially arrived in America my brothers were there to bring me up north to Washington.

    There were many Chinese immigrants meeting up with their family. Some people, like me, were buying supplies for the trip up to WA.

    We left several days I came to America because I was still recovering from the hard journy. I'm glad that my brothers gathered enough money to put me on first class.

    We arrived in my new home, an apartment. I asked my brothers why we didn't have land and they said that we couldn't get free land because we were not white and that we had to buy our own land.

    My brothers are against me trying to get an education because at Japan women didn't get an education. They thought that rather than studying and paying for an education I should work instead. I walked around town to find and stumbled across a job sign for a shop. I decided to find out where this would be and I found a small private Japanese school in a regular house.I asked the ladies who were teaching and they said that they mostly have boys in their classes, but are willing to take girls.

    I made a deal with my brothers that I will work to play for my education, and they said that can go to school. Since I couldn't understand english I couldn't attend a public school. I worked in a clothing store for 8-11 and 4-7. I attended school to 12-3. I got paid 50 cents an hour.

    My job was getting tougher everyday by the rich, white ladies coming through the door. Since I was Japanese they would call me a Jap, then treat me really bad because their husbands didn't like Asian immigrants. When I would walk around the streets there would be white fishermen, like my brothers, yelling at me because were taking their jobs.

    When I was at work my brother came in to tell me that we made a lot of money by killing a whale. After work we went to the Japanese, fish market to sell most of the whale. They were sold out after 2 hours. We made up $100.

    Seattle got a lot bigger and now there are more people moving here. The clothing store's popularity has grown, but the store's owner died. She was an old lady, and had no family, so she put the store's name in mine. My brothers made their own fishing bussiness and their bussiness is thriving.
