  • National Volunteers formed

    meeting is held to start a group of, "National Volunteers," in order to combat the, "Ulster Volunteer Force."(Ulster Unionist group)
  • The Easter Uprising Begins

    Irish Rebel forces overtake different buildings and areas around Dublin and combat the British forces for 5 days.
  • The Irish rebels surrender

    The IVF, ICA, and all smaller rebel factions involved surrender to the British forces.
  • Sinn Fein political party sets up, Dail Eireann.

    Dail Eireann, a new Irish Parliament is formed. They declare Ireland a free state of British Rule. War between the Irish and British forces goes on until 1921.
  • Irish Delegates sign a Ango-Irish Treaty

    This is highly controversial amongst different factions of the rebel groups. Twenty-six of the thirty-two counties in Ireland are to be free states. The rest stay under British rule.
  • Anti-Treaty IRA rebel against newly formed goverment.

    rebellion is badly led and IRA forces are defeated in less than a year.

    IRA Chief of Staff Frank Aiken gives order for IRA to cease Fire

    IRA goes somewhat underground until the 1960's. support for the group by the general Irish public declined. However, both sides continued to commit acts of violence against eachother throughout.
  • Minister of Home affairs puts a ban on Organized Republican Clubs

    He argued that they were only a front for the Sinn Fein. The Sinn Fein was the political party of the IRA.
  • Provisional IRA is formed

    Provisional IRA splits away from the regular IRA.
  • Bloody Sunday

    British Army opened fire on protesters in County Derry, killing thirteen civilians. The public was outraged.

    IRA prisoners strike for recognition as political prisoners

    Probably the most famous of these was the hunger strike led by Bobby Sands who died on May 5, 1981.
  • Ango-Irish Agreement

    a council is formed between the British and Sinn Fein to help deal with the different issues between the group non-violentlly.
  • IRA issues statement of cessation of military operations

    cessation continues until 26 April 1996 when the IRA set off a bomb in London.

    Those who do not recognize the peace talks broke away to form smaller groups and continue acts of violence and terrorism today.
