The first ever public school in Spirit Lake was a log cabin on Gary Avenue, between twelth and thirteenth street.

In 1866 the school moved the second story of the court house. The School authorities provided all the equipment and furnishings.

In 1872 the court house got destroyed by a fire so the school got moved to a two story structure on Hill Avenue. It was just south of the Crandall House which was later the Antler's Hotel and is now present day Heritage Square. The school took up the ground level.
