    The cold war was a war between Russia and the United states. although no bullets were shot this was an inteanse rivarly that lasted 46 years. The internet would have never been if it wasnt for this.

    In 1957, the Soviet Union became the first country to launch a satelite in orbit. The U.S became very alamerd and founded the advance reaserch project agency (ARPA). One of these projects would develope the internet

    Around 1966 IPTO developed a computer network cable of transmiting info over telephone lines. this was called "Switching"

  • Computer Reaserch Department

    In 1962, ARPA created a computer reaserch department called the information processing technologies (IPTO). The IPTO was incharge of making a way to share information between the two.

    As the ARPANet grew, scientists began adding other features. The ARPanet developed a program which enabeld people to send a breif message to each other across the network

    In 1990, Tim Berners-lee invented the World Wide Web. The Web allows for the internet to display photos, sound, and videos.

    In 1991, a search program called Gospher became public availible to the public

    In1992, Brewster Kahle invented a Wide Area information Server (WAIS). This permited computer users to search files based on their actual content.

    Also in 1992, Marc Andreessen and eric Bina who were students working at the University of Illinois, developed a browser making it easier for people to access the world wide web. the program was called Mosaic

  • Mosaic Avalible

    Within weeks Mosaic was avalible for free in 1993. Tens of thousands of people downloaded Mosaic.

  • Netscape

    By october 1994, Mosaic Communication launched a commercial web browser called netscape.

  • Internet Explorer

    In 1995, microsoft released its own web browser called Internet Explorer. Microsoft and Netscape were now big competeters

  • Millions of Sites

    By 2002, the web had expanded to to more than 36 million sites and would include thousands more daily.
