On July 16th, 1861, Union troops led by Irwin McDowell walked to Massas. They were greeted by hundreds of spectators from Washington who expected a very short and entertaining battle. Soldiers and spectators were not ready for what happened next. In this brief battle of Bull Run It was known as the First Battle of Bull Run. The south was pushed back and the north could no longer advance.
