Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia
1) Central Powers
2) Austria-Hungary was a conquered country. Serbian nationalists killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand so Austria-Hungary declared war on them.
3) The rise of militarism began when Austria and Hungaria joined.
4) People in Austria-Hunagry were from different cultures and had different ideas on things. Many hated the government. -
Serbia joins WWI
1) Central Powers
2) Serbia was a conquered country. Serbian nationalists killed the Archduke of Austria-Hungary.
3) Serbia had about 420,000 troops at one time during the war.
4) Serbian nationlists initially started the war by killing the Archduke of Austria-Hungary. -
Germany enters the war
1) Central Powers.
2) Germany declared war on Russia and France.
3) German used chemical warfare in WWI.
4) Germany took proud in how powerful they were. -
France and colonies join the war
1) Allies
2) France had an alliance with Russia during the war.
3) France had million troops in WWI.
4) The French people began taking pride in being French rather than being attatched to the king. -
Belgium joins the war
1) Allies
2) Belgium was neutral and other countries didn't respect that.
3) Belgium had machine guns and rifles during the war.
4) Belgium was attacked by Germany so they had to enter the war. -
Britain joins the war
1) Allies
2) Germany didn't respect that Belgium was neutral so that caused Britain to join the war.
3) Britain had a good army that used rifles and machine guns.
4) Over the course of the war, people weren't as supportive of the war as before. -
Russia joins the war
1) Allies
2) Russia rallied around Nicholas II when the war started.
3) Russia was very behind when it came to weapons. They were still fighting with sowrids on horseback while other countries had guns and tanks.
4) Russia's government was not very good during this time and the people wanted change. -
Montenegro enters the war
1) Allies
2) Montenegro was allied with Serbia so they entered the war after Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia.
3) Montenegro was very small so it did not have many troops.
4) The people of Montenegro had to flee when Austrian troops and the Austro-Hungarian army attacked Montenegro. -
Japan joined the war
1) Allies
2) Japan was allies with Britain and they wanted Japan to fight the German Navy.
3) Since Japan was an island, they sank many German ships.
4) Wages in Japan decreased when the war started so the Japanese people did not support the war. -
Ottoman Empire joins the war
1) Central Powers
2) The Ottoman Empire joined the war and formed the Triple Alliance.
3) They had gaps in there arsenal because they had lost many of their weapons in the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913.
4) The Ottoman Empire suffered enormous casualties during WWI so the people were not happy. -
Italy joins the war
1) Allies
2) Italy was a colonized nation.
3) Italy had good weaopons such as machine guns and rifles.
4) Italy waited to join the war but stayed in it until the end once the joined. -
Bulgaria enters the war
1) Central Powers
2) Bulgaria entered the war because it was alligned with the Central Powers when they declared war on Serbia.
3) Bulgaria had weapons such as rifles and machine guns.
4) The government of Bulgaria wanted to go to war to try and capture Macedonia. -
Portugal enters WWI
1) Neutral
2) Portugal was neutral but they wanted to comply with British requests to protect their colonies in Africa.
3) The Portuguese had a few rifles and machine guns and paricipated in unoficial conflicts but still stayed neutral.
4) Portuguese citizens did not support the war because there was food shortages in Portugal which caused civilian deaths. -
Romania joins the war
1) Allies
2) Romania was allied with Russia and they joined the war to help them on the Eastern Front.
3) Romania only had a few modern weapons such as hadguns and machine guns.
4) The King and Queen of Romania wanted to support Germany but just about everyone else in Romania didn't which caused small conflicts within Romania. -
China joins the war
1) Allies
2) China didn't want to be controlled by European powers so they joined the war.
3) China didn't have the best guns and they also fought with swords.
4) Chinese people wanted to be free so they supported the war. -
United States joins the war
1) Allies
2) The United States was colonized and they joined the war to support Great Britain and allies.
3) The US mobilized over 4,000,000 military personnel during WWI. They also sent supplies to Great Britain and other allies.
4) Americans were proud of their country and they supported it during the war. -
Greece declares war on Central Powers
1) Allies
2) Greece joined the ware because Britain encouraged them to.
3) Greece used rifles but they had little artillery.
4) The Greek people didn't really support Greece during the war -
Liberia joins WWI
1) Allies
2) Liberia was bombed by Germany so they declared war on Germany.
3) Liberia sent troops to France during WWI
4) Liberia was closely allied with the United States so the people felt safe. -
Brazil declares war on Germany
1) Allies
2) Germany sank many Brazillian ships so they entered the war.
3) Brazil mostly sent supplies to allies rather than fighting.
4) Brazillian people were initially for the war but then they did not like it so much as time went on.
