    The war between France and Prussia (the future German Empire) lasted from 1870 to 1871 ended with a humiliating defeat for France. The creation of a powerful German Empire formed, with military and industrial potential to further disrupt the European balance. Germany gained confidence and increased its aggression and France wanted to restore its honor and regain the territory back from the Germans, impacting WWI

    Spanish-American War

    On February 15, 1898, USS Maine exploded in Cuban waters and killed 266 Americans, causing news reports blaming Spain inflamed public support for U.S. intervention in Cuba’s war for independence from its Spanish colonizers. This war ended Spain's colonial empire in the Western Hemisphere and secured the position of the United States as a Pacific power. This made the US a imperial power, emerging as a world.
  • The Russo-Japanese War

    The Russo-Japanese War

    The war proved the country capable of trumping Western military ego. The Russo-Japanese War was also a naval conflict, with ships exchanging fire in the waters surrounding the Korean peninsula. The brutal conflict in the western Pacific, changed the balance of power in Asia and helped to set the stage for World War I

    The Triple Entente

    In 1907, Britain, France, and Russia created the triple entente to counter the threat posed by the Triple Alliance of Germany, Italy, and Austria-Hungary. In WWI, they came together because they were scared of Germany's power.     Austria-Hungary’s Annexation

    In 1878, Bosnia and Herzegovina came under Austro-Hungarian joint military rule, until it was fully annexed in 1908, leading up to the Bosnian crisis. Austria-Hungary was one of the Central Powers in World War I, which began with an Austro-Hungarian war declaration on the Kingdom of Serbia on 28 July 1914. This annexation was a political conflict between Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire.

  • The Second Moroccan Crisis

    The French and Germans had two different outlooks for several years over Morocco, German secretary sent a naval cruiser to anchor in a harbor on the Moroccan coast. The Germans thought was being backed by France as a pretext for seizing the country in first crisis. The British rose in support of France after the first crisis and the two crises pushed the British and French closer together forming alliance in WW1.

    The Ottoman military left Libya and let the Italians colonize Libya.The UN's intent was to have an immediate ceasefire in Libya, including an end to the current attacks against civilians. The invasion exposed the shakiness of the Ottoman Empire and its slipping control over territories. That was one of the factors that ultimately led to World War I.

    The Balkan Wars

    The First Balkan War in 1912, Serbia and Greece defeated Ottoman forces, and forced them to agree to an armistice(a truce). The League soon disintegrated, and in the Second Balkan War the Bulgarians fought the Greeks and Serbs over Macedonia, and the Ottoman Empire. Tensions grew between Serbia and Austria-Hungary. This led Austria-Hungary and Germany to decide that a war with the Serbs would be needed.The Balkan became a problem to many major European powers over trade, colonies, and military.
  • Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

    Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

    Franz Ferdinand in 2014 was shot and this highlighted the nationalism that was pulling the Austro-Hungarian Empire apart. Tension between European powers increased, Serbian extremists wanted Ferdinand dead because they feared he was too moderate and would promote a power-sharing arrangement, keeping Slavic peoples in the empire. This was a way to provoke A-H empire to declare war on Serbia. This marked the start of WWI

    In between 1914 and 1918, the central powers and allied powers fought mainly in Europe, but it also spread to the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. The assassination kicked off the start of this war. The Germany government is most responsible for WWI due to the fact that Germany played a big part in the Balkan war by urging Austria-Hungary to invade Serbia. The allies won the war after 4 long years of trench warfare and violence. This led to the treaty of versailles.
  • Bolshevik Revolution

    Increasing governmental corruption, the reactionary policies, and Russian losses in World War I contributed to widespread dissatisfaction and economic struggles. In February 1917 riots over food scarcity broke out and the Bolshevik Party seized power in Russia. This caused tension for Russia as they were out of the war.

    Russian Revolution

    This was important towards WWI due to the fact that this took Russia out of the war. Germany was free to send most of those troops to the Western Front in a final effort to win the war. Coming into the war, Russia was confident with however led to the creation of the USSR. The revolution caused widespread corruption and inefficiency within the czarist imperial government, placing the Bolsheviks in power.

    In November 1917, The Bolshevik party took away Russia's government. Russia grew mad as ruling was taken over and the angered people declared war toward the Bolshevik party. A treaty was signed declaring land as Germany's but on unequal terms. The war ended in 1920, resulting in the victory of the red army. The political system and power in Russia was broken, leaving them in a deficit.

    The Paris Peace Conference laid the groundwork for World War II by severely punishing Germany for World War I. Germans were mad its terms punished them harshly, resulting in the economy collapsing, the government losing power, and a weak military. In addition, France, England, and the United States wanted to prevent Germany from becoming strong enough to start a new war. This was a big deal after WWI as many countries didn't want Germany to have so much power.

    Treaty of Versailles

    The Treaty of Versailles was a peace treaty signed on 28 June 1919. This was the most important treaty in World War I as it ended the state of war between Germany and most Allied Powers. The treaty terms punished Germany harshly from a failed economy, starvation, war debt. There was no strong government and German Hitler and Italy Mussolini rose to dictatorship. The Nazi party came into play due to Germany not signing the treaty.

    Chinese Civil War

    The Chinese Civil War was fought between the Republic of China and forces of the Chinese Communist Party, with armed conflict continuing over at least two decades. The powerful military leaders ruled the territories by their armies and started the later Communism.The Communists gained control of mainland China and established the People's Republic of China in 1949, forcing the leadership of the Republic of China to retreat to the island of Taiwan. This was an end result of WWII.

    The Great Depression was before World War II. This was a time of unemployment, and political and economic instability. It was a time of great economic suffering throughout the world. Unstable governments were an outcome and worldwide commotion occurred helping lead to World War II. This lead to the future turmoil in every country and later the rise of Adolf Hitler, who started WWII.

    Salt production & distribution in India had long been a monopoly of the British. Indian protests against the salt tax began in the 19th century since the poor could not afford expensive, heavily taxed salt they were required to buy.The march solidified Gandhi's reputation as a powerful political leader in India and India ended up gaining their independence in 1947 from Great Britain, when WWII ended.

    In 1931, Japan was hit badly by the economic depression. Japan needed natural resources for their factories to produce goods. The Japanese army invaded China, with rich in minerals & resources. Japan invaded other areas of South East and eventually became concerned about their territories. Japan felt that its expansion could be a threat to the United States military and Japan attacked Pearl Harbor.

    The Reign of Adolf Hitler

    Adolf Hitler was the leader of Germany’s Nazi Party who was very powerful. He wanted to take absolute power in Germany beginning in 1933. Hitler became a threat to many countries and politicians/ leaders. His invasion of Poland in September 1939 drove Great Britain and France to declare war on Germany, marking the beginning of World War II. Hitler was a big part of WWII as he was closely involved in military operations throughout the war and was central to the perpetration of the Holocaust.
  • The Great Purge

    The Great Purge in 1937, is when Stalin took order to kill all the people that threatened his state. By 1928, Stalin was the head of the Communist, controlling power in Russia. The Great Purge was one of his way to delete the threats in both Soviet Party and the Communist Party. Thousand of the old Bolshevik people who helped the Revolution in 1917 were executed because of the crime. This contributed to WWII because the purge had a significant effect on German decision making in World War II.

    This war was fought between the allied and axis powers. Political and economic instability in Germany and bitterness over its defeat in World War I as well as the harsh conditions of the Treaty of Versailles, allowed Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party to rise to power. Poland proved the final straw after appeasing Hitler over Austria and Czechoslovakia. On September 3rd, 1939, Great Britain declared war on Nazi Germany

    The Battle of Britain was a turning point in World War II. This stopped Hitler from moving forward with the land invasion of the British. Britain's victory in the Battle of Britain demonstrated their courage and resilience of the country's military. This allowed the people to remain free from Nazi occupation. It also enabled the Americans to establish a base of operations in England to invade Normandy in 1944.

    The holocaust was an outcome of both wars combined. WWII played a vital role in radicalizing the Nazis policy into genocide. The Nazis reacted to a few events in the war by escalating their actions against Jews. Under conditions of war and military occupation, they could pursue racial goals with radical measures. German forces were an active part in authorized mass murders of Jews in the Soviet Union.

    Pearl Harbour

    On December 7, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy conducted a surprise assault on Pearl Harbor. This attack brought the United States into World War II, as it immediately declared war on Japan as well. Japan wanted to get the US to fleet since Pearl Harbor was the most important American naval base.

  • Foundation of United Nations

    The United Nations was officially formed on 24 October 1945 and its main purpose was to prevent war. The UN was created at the end of World War II as a peacekeeping organization and for resolving conflicts between nations. The UN replaced the ineffective League of Nations, which had failed to prevent the outbreak of WWII. The UN was still very useful in maintaining peace and harmony among the member states, protecting the environment, and advocating for human rights.

    The Cold War

    Western capitalist powers and the communist Soviet Union set up a geopolitical rivalry that dominated the world for the next five decades. The two rival blocks formed mutual defense organizations, with the west forming with NATO in 1949 and the East forming the Warsaw Pact in 1955. The political rivalry after WWII between the US and USSR was a reason this war started.
