The Russo-Japanese War
Russia broke agreements between the two nations. Japan retaliated by attacking the Russians at Port Arthur, Manchuria. Russian losses led to a revolt in the midst of the war. -
Bloody Sunday
200,00 workers protested at Winter Palace in St.Pertersburg. They protested for better working conditions. Also for personal freedom and elected national legislature. -
The First Duma
The First Duma met. It is Russia's first parliament that wanted Russia to become a constitutional monarchy. It stopped after ten weeks because Czar didn't want to share his power. -
WWI: The Final Blow
Nicholas II dragged Russia into WWI. Russia was unprepared to handle military and economic costs having them killed by the 1,000's. They were no match for Germany. More than 4 million Russian soldiers were killed. -
The March Revolution
Women texile workers in Petrograd led a city wide strike. There was shortages of bread and fuel. SOldiers were ordered to shoot them but they joined onto the women's side. -
The Bolshevik Revolution
With no warning, armed factory workers stormed the winter place in Petrograd. Bolshevik Red Guards took over government offices and arrested leaders of provisiones government. Kerensky and his friends vanished as quickly as the czarist regime they had replaced. -
Bolsheviks in Power
Russia and Germany signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. Russia surrendered a lot of territory to Germany and it's allies. Russians wanted the Bolsheviks to murder the royal family. -
Civil War Rages in Russia
Civil War was still going on in Russia. Several western nations, including the US, sent military aid and forces to Russia. Though they were of little help. -
New Economic Policy
Lenin temporarily put his plan for a state-controlled economy. He resorted to a small-scale version of capitalism called the NEP. (New Economic Policy) It allowed peasants to sell their surplus crops instead of turning them over to the government. -
Political Reforms
Lenin had a stroke and survived. Stalin becomes the dictator. The country was named the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). It was in honor of the councils that helped launch the Bolshevik Revolution.
