We freewrote about our ideas on heroes. I liked how this activity got me thinking about the everyday heroes that I know of. We read about and watched a video about Wesley Autrey-a subway hero. I think he stands as an example of an ordinary person doing great things.

We read an extract from John McCain's book "Why Courage Matters" about Roy Benavidez as an example of a war hero. I was amazed and touched by Benavidez's immense love for his fellow soldiers that caused him to sacrifice so much for them.

We watched a recorded interview with Kristi Quillen. It showed us an example of a "local" hero and helped us understand what types of questions to ask during our interviews. I was impressed that she dropped everything to go do something that she had never done before and to help others in a way that she knew how. The personal sacrifices she makes everday for others makes her a hero.

We were introduced to the Hero's Journey Assignment. In addition, we discussed Posterous, Timetoast, our interview, etc.
-
We discussed in groups what literary figures we considered as heroes. I thought about the question of whether the character Atticus Finch is the hero in "To Kill a Mockingbrid" or whether Harper Lee is the real hero for writing what Atticus said in the book. This discussion also helped me recall books that I had read before and it helped me pick out the characters in literature which I viewed as heroes, such as Jean Valjean from "Les Miserables."

We went to the library and checked out biographies/autobiographies on our heroes. We also researched our heroes online. I checked out my book on Helen Keller: "The Story of My Life"

We categorized different heroes into different categories by looking at the "type" of hero that they were/are. This activity opened my mind to the fact that heroes are/were everywhere in the world and that there all different types.

I conducted my interview with the American Sign Language teacher at Cinco Ranch HIgh School about Helen Keller. I gained valuable insight on the difficulties that blind deaf people face and now I appreciate the difficulties that Helen Keller had to overcome in her life. In addition, this further cemented my belief that Helen Keller was and still is a hero to the world.
