Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880, in Tuscumbia, Alabama. She had 2 half brothers, a sister, and another brother. Her family was very wealthy, and they owned a cotton plantation.

In 1882, at 19 months old, she got some unknown disease, and scarlet fever. It took away her ability to hear, see and speak.

Helen learned her first signals, water and doll.

On March 3, 1887, Anne Sullivan, Helen's teacher, moved in with the Keller family so she could work with Helen every day. Anne became family to Mrs and Mr. Keller and they treated her like a daughter. Later on Anne became Helen's best friend.
