  • Period: 499 BCE to 449 BCE

    The Persian Wars

    The Persian Wars happened between Greeks and Persians. Greeks won the Persian Wars. First battle is battle of Marathon, won by Greeks through the Phalanx formation(foot soldiers fight side by side with spear and shield)at Marathon; second battle is battle of Thermopylae, fight by Spartans and Greeks against Persians. They lost the battle, Spartans found out they lost because of the Greek traitor; last battle is battle of Salamis, this battle is on the sea, Greeks Persian fleet.
  • Period: 479 BCE to 431 BCE

    The Golden Age

    After the Persian war, Athens' economic prosperity led to the Golden age of culture and democracy. During the Golden age, Athens increased democracy, created the strongest navy, and built the Parthenon. They also built three types of Greek Columns: Doric( plain and basic), Ionic(have spiral scrolls), and Corinthian(most ornate). Classical art in Athens are portrayed ideal beauty, serene and youthful features. They also invented two genres in Greek theater, which was Tragedy and Comedy.
  • Period: 469 BCE to 399 BCE

    Socrates

    Socrates concluded that while others professed knowledge they did not have, He asked many questions, but he gave few answers. He didn't write any books because he believed in the superiority of argument over writing. The leader of Athens didn't want a critic in the city. The leader was trying to arrest him, the leader thought he will leave, but Socrates didn't participate. Finally, he calmly drank the poison hemlock, the customary practice of execution at that time
  • Period: 431 BCE to 404 BCE

    The Peloponnesian War

    This war happened between Spartans and Athens. The cause was Athens became too powerful after the Persian Wars, they are the leader of Delian League. Some city-states want leave the Delian League, Athens will punished the city-states, taking the Greek as slaves. Then Spartans created the Peloponnesian League. When Spartans declared the war to Athens, Pericles, the leader of Athens, brings all the citizens behind the city's wall, but the plague happens, many Athens died, so Sparta won the war.
