  • The Zollverien

    Economic interdependence during the industrial revolution saw the confederation gradually move toward unification. The Zollverien was an agreement by Prussia and northern German states to reduce custom duties.
  • The Revolution of 1848 in Prussia and the Frankfurt parliament

    By November 1848, the Prussian amry took control of Berlin, The king supressed the liberal constitution and dissolved the Frankfurt Parliament. The revolution was the defeated and the kings assumed power. In 1850, Austria and Prussia agreed to restore the German unification.

    Otto van Bismarck was appointed chancellor of Prussia by King William I. He set out to reform the army, in view of the future war for the unification of Germany.

    Denmark broke the treat of London of 1852. The German confederation led an army into the duchies. The result was a political division within the German confederation with Austria and Prussi now fighting for control.
