From 1294 to 1303 Boniface VIII was the Pope of the Catholic Church.
-
Philip IV was born to Isabella of Aragon and Philip III of France. He ruled France from 1285 to his death.
-
Pope Boniface made a document that said that kings shall always obey popes. Philip did not like this because he just claimed his authority over French bishops.
-
They fought by words and actions. King Phillip IV's ministers said "My master's sword is made of steel, the Pope's is made of [words]." Then Phillip had the pope held in prison, and bring him to France to be put on trial.
-
The Pope was rescued from prison but he was in old age, so he died a month after. After this conflict, monarches were never again forced to obey popes.
