    The Great Northern War
    The Great Northern War was fought by Sweden and a coalition led by Peter the Great. By the end of the war, Sweden had lost all of it's power in the Baltic region and was replaced by Peter the Great's Russia.
  • The Decembrist Revolt

    The Decembrist Revolt
    Russian armies led about 3000 soldiers in protest against Nicholas I's assumption of the throne after his older brother removed himself form the line of succession.

    The March Revolution was the beginning of the German Revolution of 1848-1849. This shook the semi-bureaucratic system of rule, led to a division of power between the princes and the bourgeoisie, but left the power of the government with the reactionary forces.

    Czar Alexander II Emancipates te Serfs
    Czar Alexander had to choose between having the Serfs be agricultural labourers dependent economically and administratively on the landlords or be transformed into a class of independedntcommunal proprietors. In the end, the Czar choose the second plan and the Serfs were freed.

    The Assassination of Alexander II
    Alexander II was traveling in his highly protected carriage, to the military roll call, which he attended every Sunday. When all of a sudden, a bom wrapped in a handkerchief was thrown at the carriage. The bom landed below the carriage and killed no one, but injured many. Right when Alexander was about to leave, another bom was thrown and landed right at his feet. He was then injured terribly and died shortly after.

    The Russo-Japanese War started out of rival imperial ambitions. The Russians wanted a warm water port off the Pacific Ocean for their Navy and trading. The Japanese didn't like that China allowed the Russians to use their port, so the fight began. The Russians were not prepared for battle and Japan quickly defeated them.

    The Revolution of 1905 was started after the attack on Bloody Sunday. During the revolution there were worker strikes, peasant unrest, and military mutinies. It then led to the establishment of the Constitutional Monarchy, the State Duma of the Russian Empire, the multi-part system, and the Russian Constitution of 1906.

    Bloody Sunday
    In 1905, a group of people called the Assembly of Russian Workers decidede to go on strike. They wrote a petition demanding the reduction of work days to eight hours, better working conditions, and an increse in wages. They then led a procession of workers to the Winter Palace to plead their case to Czar Nicholas II. When the group arrived there, they were greeted by the police and Cossacks. Over 100 workers and 300 people were wounded that day.

    During World War I Russia's Emperor Czar Nicholas II abdicated the Russian Throne. Russia than lost a lot of it's land and many soldiers were killed. In the end, a lot of lives were lost, and it was accompanied by famine and a bitter winter.

    Russia was under attack and Czar Nicholas II chose to abdicte from the Russian throne. He then pronounced his brother, Grand Duke Michael as the new Emperor.
