    The Great Northern War was fought between Sweden's Charles XII and Peter the Great. By the end of the war, Sweden had lost thre supremacy as the leading power in the Baltic region and was replaced by Peter the Great's Russia.

    In 1825, St. Petersburg, Russia a group of military officials preformed a revolt against Czar Nicholas I. He quickly crushed the uprising by executing five leaders and exiled hundreds more to SIberia.

    Czar Alexander II Emancipates the Serfs
    This was when Alexader II freed all of the slaves. However, the serfs had to buy land at very high prices. They continued to live in poverty because of their debts and high taxes.
  • The Assassination of Alexander II

    Alexander II took over after his mom Catherine the great died. He tried to bring back religion and morals to the Russian people and supporters of his mother didn’t like it so eventually he was assassinated.

    It was the first great war of the 20th century. In 1904 Russia lost a conflict with Japan over Korea and Manchuria. The economy for the Russian people got worse after that defeat.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    A young priest named Gapon organized a peaceful march to the czar’s palace, asking for better working conditions and political freedoms. As they arrived soldiers shot at the marchers. Over a hundred of the peaceful marchers were killed. Hundreds of others were severely wounded.

    The revolution of 1905 was in the Russian Empire. It was a wave of mass political and social unrest that spread through vast areas of the Russian Empire. The revolutionaries defeated and the Czar's kept their power

    World War I was very difficult for Russia. Nicholas II was a very poor leader. Germany had defeated Poland and was getting close to Moscow. Nocholas II was trying to defeat Germany with an open army who had very little food or supplies.
  • The March Revolution

    In March 1917, textile workers rioted in the street because of shortage of fuel and food. Many others joined until there were 400,000 pople protesting. The army was called, but instead they turned agains the army officers and sided with the protesters.
  • Czar Nicholas II abdicates the Russian throne

    Czar Nicholas II abdicates the Russian throne
    After the army had joined the protesters and there was complete chaos in the streets, the parliment of Russia said Nicholas had to step down as Czar. He offered the throne to his brother, but he turned it down. Eventually the royal family was killed by communist secret police.
