    It was a conflict with the Swedish empire. Charles XII led the Swedish army. The war started when an alliance of Russia, Denmark-Norway, and Saxony declared war on the Swedish empire. Sweden was defeated and Russia was the major power of the Baltic Sea.
  • The Decembrist Revolt

    The Decembrist Revolt
    The Decembrist Revolt took place in Imperial Russia. Russian army officers led about 3,000 soldiers in protest against Nicholas I. Rebels that partook in this event were called Decembrists.
  • Czar Alexander II Emancipates the Serfs

    Czar Alexander II Emancipates the Serfs
    Alexander II thought freeing the serfs would be safer than waiting for an uprising. Freed serfs had to pay the government annually for 49 years. The benefits promised to the freed serfs were not fulfilled. Some former serfs rioted against the government.

    The czar went to take military roll call. A member of the assassinators group was carrying a package wrapped in a handkerchief. He threw the package and it blew up, but the czar was ok. Another bomb was thrown when the czar stepped out of the carriage. That bomb killed the czar.

    It was the first great war of the 20th century. It started from a rival between the Russian empire and japan empire over Korea and Manchuria. Russia wanted a warm water port near the Pacific Ocean. Russia was defeated.
  • The Revolution of 1905

    A strike is what started the Revolution. Eventually there were over 80,000 strikers. Nationalist groups were angry. Czar Nicholas II agreed to create the Russian Empire. In June and July there were many peasant uprisings. Soon there was rising political terrorism.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Striking workers and their families gathered in one place unarmed. They sang “God Save the Czar” as they marched. Army pickets first released warning shots. 96 died and 333 were injured. Czar Nicholas II received the blame.

    Military disasters weakened the Russian army. Rasputin had a big negative impact of the royal family. Bolsheviks took power over major Russian cities. Rasputin predicted Russia would be defeated.

    This forced the Czar to abdicate. It established freedom of the press. The revolution granted a blanket amnesty to prisoners including terrorists.

    Czar Nicholas II abdicates the Russian throne
    People demanded social reforms so Czar Nicholas II was forced to abdicate the throne. Earlier he had led his country to costly wars. A secret meeting was held later and the royal family was sentenced to death.
