Events Leading Up to the Russian Revolution

  • The Great Northern War

    The Great Northern War
    The Great Northern War is also called the Second Northern War. Russia was allies with Denmark, Poland, and Saxony. Peter the Great led the Russians in the war against Sweden. During the war, Peter found the new capital of Russia, St. Petersburg. Near the end of all of this, the Treaty of Nystad was established. The treaty was to make peace between the two countries. Many people were killed in this war and the countries both had to recover from the war.
  • The Decembrist Revolt

    The Decembrist Revolt
    The revolt was when a group of officers and nobles wanted to take over the goverment from the czar. They didn't like how he powered the goverment and wanted to change it. This group wanted to give the czar a little less power to the goverment. Kondraty Fyodorovich Ryleyev was a leader and a Russian poet in this act. Czar Nicholas executed five main leaders and sent hundreds of others to Siberia.

    Czar Alexander II Emancipates the Serfs
    Czar Alexander II freed the serfs in 1861. The serfs were peasent who had to stay with the land and worked for the owner of the land. They worked in exchange for protection. When they were freed, they got very little rights and got to keep their house and tools. They had to buy all the land they wanted for high prices, instead of the land given to them. Because of this, most serfs were poor and pay high taxes. Later, Alexander II wanted to open schools and improved care for health.

    The Assassination of Alexander II
    Alexander II was killed on the streets in a city called St. Petersburg. A member of the People's Will group threw a bomb at him and later he died. Some other people that were near him were hurt or died. It changed many lives of people that knew him.

    Russia was crushed by Japan in the Russo-Japanese War. This was the very first time an Asian country had defeated a large European power. The Treaty Because of this war. Japan conquered a large part of Cina and threatened to take over Southeast Asia. Jananese troops really affected many people in terrible ways. They tortured and killed anyone who didn't agree with them. Also, they took food and anything else the people had that the troops wanted.

    Suddenly, the people heard gun shots and everyone droped to the ground. Over 100 people died that marched and hundreds were wounded.

    This was taken place in St. Petersburg at the czar's Winter Palace on a snowy Suday. A group of worker were led by a priest to demand for political freedoms and better working conditions. There were unarmed families and carried signs to help support their beliefs. The people thought if they go by the czar's palace, the czar would respond to them. When they got to the palace, they met soldiers. The leader of the people thought the soldiers would not touch them, so they moved on.

    This was an effect of Bloody Sunday. There were fights and striks in the cities. People burned down houses of the landowners. Violence was everywhere. After this had happened, Nicholas II agreed with the people to set up an elected assembly called the Duma. He also made some little reforms. This calmed down many groups of people.

    During World War I, the Russian army was fighting in the war. The war was between Russia and Germany. Russia had thousands of people in the army that was fighting. Russia made one last great contribute to the war was in May of 1916. Russian went right to the Germany boarder.

    There was starvation in the cities, which caused the March Revolution. This caused even more worse problems in Russia. Strikes and riots happened in the cities. People and Countries were threatened by all of this happening. Czar Nicholas sent troops to handle all of the people.

    Czar Nicholas II Abdicates the Russian Throne
    This was a time were the people were starving and the czar didn't help. Because of this, Nicholas had abdicate the throne. Abdicate means to leave or step down from the throne or power. After he left the throne, him and his family had to go to Siberie and later they were executed there. It effected the people by not having a czar anymore. Their goverment changed and their was no Czar to rule.
