Events Leading up to the Russian Revolution

  • The Great Northern War

    The Great Northern War
    Peter the great started the secound Northern War to ensure Russia's way to the Baltic coast. Polland and Denmark were his allies during this war. The war came to an end by the Treaty of Nystad in 1721. This event resulted in the making of the Russian Empire and made Peter the Great an emperor of Russia. This also changed history because Russia was used to having czar's instead of emperors. This ment Russia was starting to change.
  • The Decembrist Revolt

    The Decembrist Revolt
    A group of nobles and army officers, in hopes of trying to establish a constitutional monarchy tried to over throw the czar's government. They failed this task because the czar (Nicholas I) crushed their uprising by killing five of the leaders and sending hundreds away to Siberia. Despite this failer the people who led the Decembrist Revolt later became roll models (heros) for later genertations.
  • Czar Alexander II Emancipates the Serfs

    Czar Alexander II Emancipates the Serfs
    In 1861 Alexander II freed (emancipated) the serfs, the newly freed serfs gained a few political rights and were allowed to keep their homes and tools. Even though the serfs were freed it did not necessarily mean that life got easier. The serfs had to buy their own land but for very high prices this resulted in high debt and high taxes which resulted in the serfs yet again living in poverty. This also resulted in relaxed censorship, building of schools, and improved health care (modernization).

    The Assasination od Alexander II
    The Russians were frustrated with the slow pace of change from their czar Alexander II so they decided they were going to over throw the czar and establish socialism. This is exactly what they did in 1881 when they assassinated the czar. This resulted in Marxism and a new leader Nicholas II. The leader ship of Nicholas II resulted in Bloody Sunday, the Russian Revolution, and eventually his own assassination.
  • The Russo-Japanese War

    The Russo-Japanese War
    This conflict developed out of rivalry between Russia and Japan for dominance over Korea and Manchuria. Russia wanted a warm water port on the Pacific Ocean for their Navy and for trading purposes. Japan won this War because of Russia’s disorganization and the many battles on land and sea. This effected Russia because of loss of war, power, money, and a warm water port. In other words it hit Russia pretty hard especially in the economy department

    Bloody Sunday
    Bloody Sunday started out as a Peaceful March lead by a young priest by the name of Father Georgi Gapon. The thousands of workers in the march were asking for better working conditions and a few political freedoms. When the peaceful unarmed protesters approached the czar’s palace they were rudely greeted by soldiers. The soldiers fired at the peaceful protesters and over a hundreds were killed and hundreds more were severely wounded. This resulted in starting the Russian Revolution and a elec

    Bloody Sunday sparked or lead to this revolution because after people started hearing about the outrage of Bloody Sunday riots and strikes out broke in many Russian cities. Even the serfs got involved by burning the homes of the landowners. To try to stop the violence the Czar Nicolas the II set up a elected assembly called the Duma. This unfortunately did not solve Russia’s problems because of the small amount of power given.This also resulted in more conflict between the people and gov.

    During World War I Germany was Russia's number one enemy. Russia and Germany had many battles but Russia seemed ruthless no matter how many times they lost they got right back up again (this determination helped the allies to win the war) During World War Ithe Russian Revolution broke out in March 11,1917. Later to end this Revolution they ended up giving away lots of land and signing a treaty in 1918.This changed Russia in a big way becuase they had to give up alot of land.

    Only a week after The March Rvolution erupted in Russiqa Nicholas II abdicated the Russion throne. (gave up the Russian throne) With the temparary government established at the time people gainded freedom of speech and religion. This also caused for the first time Russia had their own written laws instead of being controlled by a czar. This later had an effect on people becase they were starting to realize that they did'nt need a czar and begain to make them think about Monarchy.
  • The March Revolution

    The March Revolution
    The March Revolution was caused by workers demanding more money in order to buys food. The management refused to give the workers more money so the workers went on strike. Later in the week 30,000 workers were locked out of work and were not paid. This meant they could no longer afford to buy food. After this the riots got worse and worse along with the amount of starving people in Russia.This all resulted in the czars assassination (along with his family) and change in government after the czar
