  • The Great Northern War

    The Great Northern War
    The Great Northern War was a conflict between the Swedish Empire and a coalition of Denmark-Norway, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Saxony, and the Russian Empire. Russian Czar Peter the Great led the coalition of countries.The conflict took place from February 1700- August 1721. Russia won the war, gaining a warm water port in the Baltic Sea.
  • The Decembrist Revolt

    The Decembrist Revolt
    The Decembrist Revolt took place in December of 1825 in the Senate Square in St. Petersburg, Russia. A group of 3,000 soldiers led by a group of Russian army officers protested against Nicholas I being in power. These people were called decembrists because the event tooke place in December. Nicholas suppressed the uprising by ordering his troops to fire.
  • Czar Alexander II Emancipates the Serfs

    Czar Alexander II Emancipates the Serfs
    One important thing Czar Alexander II did while in power was emancipate the serfs in 1861. Serfs were granted the full rights of free citizens, gaining the rights to marry without having to gain consent, to own a business, and to own property. However, many serfs didn't have enough money to do any of those things. So the only thing they really gained was not being tied to the land anymore.
  • The Assassination of Alexander II

    The Assassination of Alexander II
    Alexander II was assassinated on the streets of St. Petersburg by a bomb thrown by a member of the revolutionary "People's Will" group. After 4 other seperate attempts, Alexander was assassinated on March 13th, 1881. After his death, his son, Alexander III, took his place as emperor.

    The Russo-Japanese War took place from February 8th, 1904 to September 15th, 1905. One of the reasons the war took place was bcause Russia and Japan were fighting for dominance in Korea and Manchuria. The war was one cause of the Russian Revolution of 1905.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    Bloody Sunday was massacre that took place after the Revolution of 1905. Many peaceful protesters gathered at six points in St. Petersburg. They protested for a better lifestyle and government. Czar Nicholas II thought they were protesting against him and were going to fire, so he ordered his army to fire. Many people died and were injured.

    The Revolution of 1905 was part of a massive strike that lasted from October 7th to October 17th caused by a peaceful protest held on January 22nd known as Bloody Sunday. After that, a long period of time was filled with revolts and strikes asking for more rights. It was ended after Czar Nicholas issued the October Manifesto.

    Russia did not do very well in WWI. They were part of the allied side. Troops did not have enough food and equipment and it was poorly led. They pulled out of the war in 1917 after many deaths and injuries. Many people blamed the czar.

    The March Revolution took place in 1917 and forced the czar to abdicate. Nicholas II was blamed for Russia doing poorly in WWI. There were many food, equipment, and fuel shortages.

    Czar Nicholas II Abdicates the Russian Throne
    On March 15th, 1817 Russian Czar Nicholas II abdicated the throne. After his father, Czar Alexander III, passed away from liver disease on October 20th, 1894, Nicholas took the throne. Nicholas was not prepared to rule, nor did he want to. Some of the reasons he was forced to abdicate was because Russia was defeated in the Russo-Japanese War and many Russians were killed in WWI.
