    Great Northern War
    Just like all of the other wars, there was an extreme lack of food and supplies while in this war. The supplies were different though. In this war clothing and boots were lacking.
  • The Decembrist Revolt

    The Decembrist Revolt
    The Decembrist Revolt is when some army officers and nobles hoped that they could set up a constitutional monarchy. The created an uprising, but Czar Nicholas I crushed it quickly. The czar executed 5 of the leaders and exiled more. He also banned a lot of books, T.V. shows, and anything that is from the west. He didn't want his people to get the "wrong" ideas about the government.

    Czar Alexander II emancipates the serfs
    Serfdom was slowing industralization. Factory owners couldn't find enough employees because most of the population was a serf.Most people realized that there needed to be a change. Alaxander II freed the serfs in 1861. The serfs got some political rights and were allowed to keep their home and tools.

    Czar Alexander II was killed in the streets in St. Petersburg by a bomb that was thrown by a member of the "People"s Will" group.
  • Russo-Japenese War

    Russo-Japenese War
    The cause of the Russo-Japenese War was conflict over Korea and Manchuria. Russia lost the war and that created even more hardships for the country.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    A group of workers who were peacefully protesting better working conditions and some political freedoms, were shot by soliders at the gate of the czar's palace. Hundred died, and many more were wounded. The blood seeped into the snow, since it was in January. That is why people call it Bloody Sunday.

    The Revolution of 1905 was a revolt of the peasants. They wanted better wages and hours and better conditions. Thousands packed St. Petersburg squares demonstrating. This was sparked by Bloody Sunday events.
  • World War I

    World War I
    Russia joined the Allies, Britian and France. They were fighting Germany and Austria-Hungary. This war created a strain on the industry because it wasn't developed enough. The Russian troops could not supply the army's fronts with fresh supplies because of transportation issues. Most people blamed the czar with what was going on.
  • March Revolution

    March Revolution
    Riots and strikes rose up in Petrograd, which was the name for St. Petersburg, about the war that was going on at the time and the food shortage because of the war. The government sent troops but the soliders refused to fire at the protesters, instead they joined them. The demonstraters then overthrew the czarist officials and Czar Nicholas II gave up the throne.

    Czar Nicholas II abdicates the Russian throne
    After being under pressure withthe March Revolution going on, Czar Nicholas II gave up the Russian throne. The Duma set up a provisional government who introduced reforms.
