  • The Great Northern War

    The Great Northern War
    Peter the Great led other countries and Russia to victory over Sweden in the Great Northern War from 1700 to 1721. This ended Sweden's leading power over the Baltic and was replaced by Peter the Great's Russia.
  • Decembrist Revolt

    Decembrist Revolt
    A small group of nobles and army officers tried to overthrow the czar government. Nickolas the First crushed the revolution and executed 5 leaders and exiled hundreds to Siberia.
  • Czar Alexander II Emancipates the Serfs

    Czar Alexander II Emancipates the Serfs
    Czar Alexander II freed the serfs from their nobles. Serfs were then allowed to keep their homes and tools and they also gained political rights. They were not given land and the land prices were high, so they had to buy land which created more debt.
  • The Assassination of Alexander II

    The Assassination of Alexander II
    Czar Alexander II was killed by a revolution group that used terrorism and assassination to overthrow the Czarist rule over Russia. They killed other officers too, but Alexander III took control as czar.
  • The Russo-Japanese War

    The Russo-Japanese War
    In 1904, Japan fought Russia over Korea and Manchuria. This war ended in defeat for Russia and increased economic hardship.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    Father Gapon led a peaceful march of factory workers to czar's palace in St. Petersburg. They would present a petition to Nicholas II for better work conditions and some political freedoms. The CZar sent out soldiers and they started to shoot at the crowd a killed more than 100 and wounded hundreds more.
  • Revolution of 1905

    Revolution of 1905
    This revolution was sparked by Bloody Sunday. Riots and strikeds broke out in cities while on the country side peasants looted and burned their landowner's house. It ended when Nicholas II agreed to set up an elected assembly called the Duma to make minor reforms.
  • World War I

    World War I
    World War 1 was the first Great World War between Austria-Hungary and Germany against Russia, England, and France. Russia suffered tremendous casualties because of lack of equipment.
  • The March Revolution

    The March Revolution
    Riots and strikes began again in Petrograd, the capital of Russia. The crowd protested against Russia's participation in World War I and the food shortages. Soldiers were put out to crush the rebelion, but hundreds would join the cause. This eventually lead to Nicholas II abdicating the throne of the czar.

    After a week of riots in Petrograd, Czar Nicholas II abdicated, or gave up, the throne.
