Events Leading Up to The Russian Revolution

  • The Great Northern War

    The Great Northern War
    Peter the Great had nothing against Sweden but he made war with them. Peter wanted a port because Russia only had one very small port which was very hard to access. Sweden was in disarray and was very suprised by the attacks. The war ended in 1721 and Russia got it's land and port.
  • The Decembrist Revolt

    The Decembrist Revolt
    A small group of nobles and army officers tried to overthrow the Czar. The group also tried to overthrow the whole government. They all wanted a constitutional monarchy. Nicholas I crushed the revolt and executed 5 of the leaders. Hundreds of people were sent to Siberia. Later they became heroes to later generations
  • Emancipation of the Serfs

    Emancipation of the Serfs
    Although the serfs were emancipated, they gained little feedom. They were able to buy land but land was very expensive so many serfs did not have land. Czar Alexander II was considered the "Czar Liberator" which did fit him well.
  • Assassination of Alexander II

    Assassination of Alexander II
    Alexander II gets assassinated in the streets of St. Petersburg by a bomb thrown by a member of the "People's Will" group. The group also killed officials and tried to assassinate Alkexander II many times before. Reason was that Alexander II turned very repressive after he was challenged for the throne and stopped all political re forms. The assassins were jailed and then hung.

    Bloody Sunday started off the revolution and many workers went on strike throughout Russia against the Czar for a better economy. The the Russo-Japanese war made matters even worse. The Czar sent loyalist troops to stop the protests in Moscow and in St. Petersburg. The people demanded a Duma who made decisions with the Czar. The Duma was created but it was very much just a puppet of the Czar and it kept people happy.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    A group of workers led by a priest known as Georgy Apollonovich had a strike against Russia for new re forms and better economy. The soldiers guarding the Czars Winter Palace opened fire on the group and killed or wounded hundreds. Every time the story is told the number of deaths rise because of the brutality everyone remembers as Blood Sunday.

    The people rallied with Nicholas II for the war. Nicholas went to the eastern front to inspire his army but that left Alexandra with control over the cities. Alexandra's decisions were influenced by Grigory Rasputin who seemed to have the power to save her child. Rasputin advise Nicholas not to join the war because it was predicted Russia would lose.
  • The March Revolution

    The March Revolution
    On this day, Czar Nicholas was persuaded that things were very bad in Russia and in the Royal Family. The plan was for Nicholas's son to take over, Alexis, but Nicholas believed he was too weak so he dismissed the idea. The throne was then offered to Grand Duke Michael but he refused. Then it was clear the government did not want a czar anymore so he gave up the throne.
  • Czar Nicholas II Abdictates the Throne

    Czar Nicholas II Abdictates the Throne
    Czar Nicholas II is forced to abdictate the throne by Petrograd insurgents. Nicholas was not trained to rule so he was a very poor leader. Nicholas then led Russia into another devestating war and the economy was wrecked. The Czars whole family was gunned down on July 16 in the Palace they were prisoned in. This marked the end of the Czars of Russia and it was a very tragic and brutal ending.
