  • The Great Northern War

    The Great Northern War
    The Great Northern War lasted from February 2, 1700-September 10, 1721. The war started when Russia and their alliance with Denmark, Poland, and Saxony declared war on Sweden. Peter the Great wanted to attack Sweden to ensure Russia to the Baltic coast. Sweden lost the war and their baltic provinces. Russia became the new power of the Baltic region.
  • The Decembrist Revolt

    The Decembrist Revolt
    The Decembrist Revolt took place at Senate Square in St. Petersburg, Russia. The Decembrist Revolt was when a group of military officials and nobles tried to revolt against Czar Nicholas I. About 3,000 soldiers were in on this revolt. The "rebels" didn't like Nicholas's views, and they wanted to make a constitutional monarchy. Nicholas quickly ended the revolt but he killed five leaders, and he sent hundreds of more people to Siberia.

    After Nicholas ended the revolt, he responded in bad ways. He banned any books that may have contained liberal ideas, and he enforced strict censorship. Also, he used secret police to spy on teachers, students, and government officials. Nicholas accused over 150,000 people of treason and he sent them to Siberia.

    Czar Alexander II Emancipates the Serfs
    The emancipation of serfs was one of the most important reforms made during Czar Alexander II's reign. When the serfs were emancipated they became free citizens, and they had free rights. Also, the serfs were free to marry, and buy their own land and buisnesses. If the serfs were "tied" to their land, they were allowed to buy it. This emancipation also caused a growth in commercial farming.

  • The Assassination of Alexander II

    The Assassination of Alexander II
    The assassination of Alexander II happened on March 18, 1881 at Winters Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia. Alexander was in his carriage and a bomb was thrown under it. The person that assassinated him was apart of the "People's Will" group, and they tried to assassinate Alexander many times before. In effect of his death there was a huge setback of the reform movement. Also, Alexander wasn't able to present his idea of the "Duma" to the press/people. The Duma then wasn't made until 1905.

    The Russo-Japanese War lasted from February 8, 1904-September 5, 1905. This war was a conflict between Russia and Japan, because Japan made Russia stop their expansionist policy.Russia's military wasn't doing well, so Nicholas took over it himself. When they lost, he became a sign of defeat throughout Russia. One of the battles was a surprise naval attack by Japan on one of Russia's naval bases in China.

    The Revolution of 1905 began from the incident of Bloody Sunday, and it lasted from January 2, 1905-June 16, 1907. For months after the start of this revolution there were lots of: riots, protests, peasant outbreaks, and army mutinies (rebellions). In result to this revolution, Czar Nicholas II created the Duma (lower house of Russian parliament).

    Bloody Sunday
    Bloody Sunday took place in St. Petersburg, Russia. A group of demonstraters (led by Father Gapon) marched peacefully to the Winter Palace and made their demands. However, the demonstraters didn't know Czar Nicholas II wasn't at the palace. Imperial forces opened fire on the demonstraters, wounding and killing hundreds. In response to this massacre, there were many protests all around the world. This also was one of the key events that led up to the Russian Revolution of 1917.

    World War I was a war mostly centered in Russia from 1914-1918. Russia was apart of the allied powers, which mainly included: United States, France, Italy, Great Britain, and Russia. Early in this war, Russia invaded Germany but they pushed back Russia's army. Russia was involved throughout other battles also. However, Russia pulled out of the war in 1917 due to them not having any money. WW1 was won by the allied powers.

    This backfired because many of the soldiers joined in on the protesting. The protesting only lasted a couple days, because on March 15, 1917 Czar Nicholas abdictated his throne.

    The March Revolution, otherwise known as the February Revolution, started on March 8, 1917 in St. Petersburg, Russia. This revolution started with many strikes and riots in the streets of St. Petersburg. There were about 90,000 men and women participating in this strike. The revolution started because there were food shortages in the city. The protesting wasn't a threat at first, but when it worsened Czar Nicholas II sent troops to end it.

    Czar Nicholas II Abdictates the Russian Throne
    On March 15, 1917 the last czar of Russia, Nicholas II, abdicated his throne. Czar Nicholas II abdicated his throne at the end of the March Revolution. He lost all control of the people, and his own authorities turned against him. He was forced to abdicate his throne by a group of Petrograd men. After this happened, Nicholas and his family went to a safe house and they were kept under house arrest for nearly a year. In 1918 they were all murdered.
