  • The Dual Alliance

    The Dual Alliance
    In 1879 Germany and Austria-Hungary in the hopes to support each other in case of an attack by Russia. www.britannica.com/event/Austro-German-Alliance.com
  • Triple Alliance formed

    Italy "secretly" joins Germany and Austria-Hungry in alliance if any of them were to be attacked. Italy had several "if/thens" built into their alliance, promising to remain neutral under certain circumstances.
  • Franco-Russian Alliance

    France formed an alliance with Russia as a defensive agreement to help each other if either of them were attacked. This was in response to the formation of the Triple Alliance.

    Pig War

    Tensions between Serbia and Austria-Hungary were high prior to the assignation of archduke Ferdinand. For two years Austria imposed a blockade on Serbian pork. Russia got involved on Serbia's behalf and Germany stepped in stopping a war between Russia and Austria-Hungary. Austria eventually gave up and gave in when a new trade route was being worked out on the Adriatic Sea.
  • Triple Entente

    Russia and France are joined by Britain in friendly agreement against the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria and Italy). This made Germany feel that they were being surrounded and made them very worried.
  • Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand

    Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand
    Franz Ferdinand was heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne and was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip. Princip was a Serbian nationalist who was angry with the Austro-Hungarian empire. Princip shot the archduke and his wife with a pistol while they were riding in a car to visit people who had been injured by a bomb that was meant for them earlier that day.

    Germany declares war on Russia and France
    Back in 1879 Germany and Austria-Hungary formed a Dual Alliance to protect themselves from an attack from either France or Russia. In response to the massing Russian troops and Russia aligning themselves with Serbia against Austria-Hungary, Germany declares war on Russian and three days later declares war on France.

    German army invades Belgium and Britain declares war on Germany
    Under a treaty that was signed in 1839, Belgium was to remain neutral. On August 3rd Germany is warned not to invade Belgium or Britain would go to war. The German army marched into Belgium the next day.

    As part of the alliance with Germany and because of Russian support of Serbia, Austria-Hungary declares war on Russia.
