The Great Northern War was from 1700-1721. The battle was fought between Sweden and Russia. Peter the Great was the leader of Russia at the time. He wanted to gain a warm water port so he went to war with Sweden

When a small group of nobles and army men tried to overthrow the czar, Nicholas the 2nd immediately rushed to the scene.He executed 5 leaders and moved hundreds more to Siberia. Nicholas the 2nd responded with repression. He forced strict censorship, banned books, and targeted schools and universities.

Alexander the 2nd believed there was going to be an uprising by the serfs. So he tried to free them. All the serfs were ahppy besides one major problem. They didnt have any money to buy things like a house or land.

Alexander the 2nd's ruling on was challenged and he started to turn repressive. Alexander the 2nd was killedin the streets by a bomb thrown by a revolutionary group. This same group tried to overthrow the czarist autocracy.

Russia wanted a warm water port on the Pacific. So they tried taking some of Japans land. Everybody thought that Russia would just dominate, but they didnt. They didnt have enough transportation to get their soldiers and their supplies there fast enough.

Father Gapon lead 200,000 people to the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. The czar quickly respnded with tons of soldiers outside the palace. The soldiers just lined up and started firing. There was a total of 100 dead and 3000 wounded.

There was a mass wave of political and social unrest. Most of the attacks were unorganized. One of te things that was created after this was the Duma. Another was a limited constitutional monarchy.

Russia was part of the Allied side and they did not do very well. They didnt have enough guns, soldier, and other supplies. They were also poorly led. Russia pulled out of the war in 1917.

Cazar Nicholas the 2nd was forced to abdicate his throne becasue tf the strikes and revolts in St. Petersburg. He couldn't take the stress so he abdicated. His family and him were kept at Czarskoye Selo Palace. They ended up all getting murdered y the Bolsheviks.

Events leading to the March Revolution was the country starting to fall apart. They had too much land and too many people to control. You cant rule that much and keep a good government. There was a revolt.
