Events Leading To The Russian Revolution

  • The Great Northern War

    The Great Northern War lasted from 1700 to 1721. The Great Northern War was fought between Sweden's Charles XII and a coalition lead by Peter the Great. By the end of the war, Sweden had lost her supremacy as the leading power in the Baltic region and was replaced by Peter the Great's Russia.
  • The Decembrist Revolt

    The Decembrist Revolt was basically an uprising against czar Nicholas I. 3,000 members of the military revolted against the czar. On December 26th, the people launched their plan into action. They went against the loyal troops for a long time. The uprising was stopped by the czar. A total of 1,271 lives were taken during this uprising.
  • Czar Alexander II Emancipates the Serfs

    In 1861, the serfs were given their freedom by Czar Alexander the Second. With their new freedom, the serfs were now able to own their own property, marry who they want to marry, and buy their land from their previous owner's estate. The serfs could also trade freely, could sue people, and vote at the local elections. These serfs were really only freed because of the Crimean War.
  • The Assassination of Alexander II

    He was killed in St. Petersburg by a bomb. He was killed by a member of the "People's Will" group. They murdered several officials before they tried to kill the czar. They tried to kill him several times after the officals. Finally, they succeded in 1881.
  • The Russo-Japanese War

    This war happened in 1904 and 1905. During the subsequent Russo-Japanese War, Japan won a series of decisive victories over the Russians, who underestimated the military potential of its non-Western opponent. Russia lost 3 battles, which only made Russia want to defeat Japan more. In 1905, President Teddy Roosevelt made the two countries sign a peace treaty to stop the war.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday is the day where people were shot by the czar's soldiers for no reason. Workers led by Father Gapon marched to the winter palace to prostest against the czar about various things wrong about the working conditions and government. Soliers opened fired at the protesters adn lots were killed and wounded. This casued people in Russia to riot against the czar.
  • The Revolution of 1905

    The Russian Revolution was an after effect of "Bloody SUnday". People were upset and started protesting. The Russian Revolution of 1905 was also an uprising that was instrumental in convincing Tsar Nicholas II to attempt the transformation of the Russian government from an autocracy into a constitutional monarchy. Their protests ranged from liberal rhetoric to strikes and included student riots and terrorist assassinations.
  • Russia's Involvement in World War 1

    The war started out when Francis Ferdinand assassinated. Then countries started declaring war on each other after that. Russia wasn't really remembered a lot in this war. Russia was on the same side as France and Great Britain. Lots of Russian soldiers died and like I said above, Russia wasn't really remembered in this war.
  • Czar Nicholas II abdicates the Russian throne

    During the February Revolution, Czar Nicholas II, ruler of Russia since 1894, is forced to abdicate the throne by the Petrograd insurgents, and a provincial government is installed in his place. There are probally many reasons why he was abdicated. One that I was able to find was that he wasn't trained to rule. So he basically came in with no experience what so ever.
  • The March Revolution

    The March revolution forced the Czar to abdicate, established freedom of the press, and granted a blanket amnesty to political prisoners in Siberia - including terrorists. Russia seemed to be free after that, but they were wrong. The Bolsheviks started to take over Russia.
