Anti-British Riots
In Cairo anti-British riots kill at least 20 people. Hundreds have also been injured in the riots. Up to 17 British people may have been murdered. About 200 people were injured and another 300 arrested. -
Egypt becomes a republic
Egypt abandons its 140 year old monarchy. Egypt declares itself a republic on June 18, 1953. Maj. Gen. Mohammed Naguib became it's first president. Egypts royal family stripped of power and become private citizens. -
Aswan High Dam completed
The Aswan High Dam stretches across the NIle river at Aswan. It was finished on July 21, 1970. It was inaugurated in January 1971. It cost about $1 million dollars. -
Anwar al-Sadat assassinated
Anwar al-Sadat assassinated by Jihad members. Anwar was Egypt's president. Anwar was shot at and arrived at the hospital without a heartbeat. He was pronounced dead at local time 2:40 P.M. -
Egypt rejoins Arab League
Egypt was welcomed back into the Arab league after 10 years. There wasn't an official vote to reinstate Egypt. President Mubarak went to attend a summitin Casablanca. It was said Egypts participation in a summit meeting marked its return. -
Attempted assassination of President Mubarak
Mubarak had gone to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia for the Organization of African Unity summit. While there he was targeted by the Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Mubarak's motorcade was ambushed by 9 of the would be assassins. 5 of the assassin's were kiled by Mubarak's bodyguards. -
Train fire in Cairo
A train caught fire in Cairo, Egypt. There were estimated to be 370 dead. Anther 65 people were being treated for their injuries. This was one of the worst incidents in Egypts railroad history. -
Church construction clash
A protestor was killed and many others injured. The police were firing tear gas while the Christians were throwing stones and petrol bombs. Officials said they did not have the right permits to build a church in Cairo's Giza district. The Christians disagreed saying they had permission to build the church. -
Egypt kills militants
The Egyptians, fighting against jihadis, have killed around 36 people. This fight takes place in the Sinai peninsula which has been described as volatile. Israel and the United States both voiced concerns of terrorist cells forming in Sinai. Soldiers killed 32 suspected terrorists and destroyed 31 tunnels connecting Gaza and Egypt. -
Egypt declares Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist group
The Egyptian government declared the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist group. All of the Brotherhood's activities have been criminilised as well as financing or even being a member of the group. This is the fight between the government and the group escalating. It was said this was a response to a suicide bombing of a police headquarters which the Brotherhood denies being responsible for.
