    Start Of Research
We created a page on our blog to place all of our reserach, it was good to keep our work organised and allow us to all contribute simultaeneously, We had examples for our research and we annotated it at the side.

Use, Challenge and development of conventions of real media products

The time it took to do our research and planning prior to filming, it allowed us to decide what codes and conventions to follow and which to challenge.
  • Use of real media products

    Use of real media products
For this, we gathered numerous real media documentaries, in thew three main styles, subject lead, narrated and presented. We watched all three styles and picked out what we liked about them all before choosing the subject lead approach. We stil bared in mind the good things about the other styles but we chose subject lead to create the personal feel we wanted to create.
  • Platfroms for our production

    Platfroms for our production
We decided to make a documentary on the music genre meaning that we needed to produce a film piece of media as well as two print ancillary products, They are for a tv lisitings page and a newpaper advertisement.
  • ...Conforming to genre conventions

    ...Conforming to genre conventions
...His own music provided a realistic feel and a authentic take on the documentary, the subject in music documentsries often use their own work as a background track as it makes it more about them and a more focused piece. In terms of lighting we used a LED lighting set up to give the room high key lighting for a vibrant feel. We wanted to make the scne as natural as possible so didn't set it too strong as well as being able to capture a better quality shot and not have too much grain on our....
  • Genre Conventions

    Genre Conventions
For our conventions to follow we took a lot of inspiration from 'Ed sheeran; Nine days and nights as it matched the theme we was aiming to achieve; about a hopeful music star, following him on his ordinary life and the changes that come with success. It had ubeat themes with humour and was still able to keep serious themes at times with honesty. It followed the subject of the documentary around with him leading his own interviews and disussing his lifestyle. He used his own music as background.
  • Confroming to conventions

    Confroming to conventions
...Shots, in the work we looked at we used youtube for most of our clips and found they all used lighting to convey the mood, Ed sheeran used natural lighting in many high key lighting scenes. Also we used basic sound equipment for a real feel of being in the scene with Callum. We also used family friends as well as Callum and his 'manager' as it gave us different viewpoints and documentaries like Ed's use different sources of information.
  • confronting conventions

We confronted conventions like how Jackass used multiple interviewee's, we wanted to keep our work as perosnal as possible so only used sources as neccessitiy to give us a opinion on our subject not just from our subject(cal). Our montage scene at the begining confronted tropes was as it was used in a fast speed and was done purely for asthetic value and not for realism, we felt it set our products apart from others whilst setting a tone for our piece and grabbing the audiences attention.
  • ...Confronting conventions

    ...Confronting conventions
At this point we noticed Cribs used a montage but in a different way to ours, they showed fast clips of the subject as the intro for a much longer period of time to ours where we wanted to throw the audience into the info as they are watching a documentary with a more niche audience than the 'cribs' episode so may get bored if it didn't start quick.
  • Ancillary products- newspaper ad

For our ancillary products we conformed well with tropes and made a professional product as a result, the newspaper ad follwed the same exact conventions as Ed's and Miley Cirus's documentaries done by MTV, We made it glosssy and artistic following the same template as MTV's for realism, the only challenge we made was that we added a realease date as Cal isn't going to appeal to a mass audience like Ed or Miley so need some extra info to make less effort for the audience and pull the audience in
  • TV lisitngs page

For the TV lisitngs page we conformed to the tropes as we added numerous pictures and made a very 'busy' layout. We added a mini interview to give a taste of the themes brought up in the documentary without copying the script from the show. We challenged tv lisitngs pages slightly as it we made it look slightly more proffesional than many tv lisitngs pages, tey naturally look tacky and a bit amataeur like Ant and Dec's which we looked at. We found as our show had a theme and mood, it needed ...
  • .....TV lisitngs

The mood gives off the themes of the show, as well as catching the consumers eye and is still a busy enough layout to look like it has a place in a tv magazine.
  • contributions

To demonstrate our use and challehnges to tropes we conducted interviews themed by the music industry and along similar subjects to what is covered in Ed sheerans 9 days and nights as well as Nickelback's documentary when they ask about their careers and what their journey. Our photoshoots had virant yet moody themes to match the mood of our production. When we edited the work we used the questions that best conveyed the ubeat atmosphere with the serious mood of his aims like in Ed Sheeran and..
  • .....contributions

....His aims are serious and required that mood but we wanted to keep a fun friendly theme as the idea of the documentary is to boost his profile in a positive light like in Jackass the Bryan Dunn story. We were inspired by the way they kept the themes fun and happy but still managed to be serious in their themes when neccessary.
