    Thriller Research
We initially researched the Thriller genre individually so that we knew the conventions of a thriller film and opening title sequence so we could plan our own film and construct our own opening title sequence.

    Evaluation Q7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
  • Forming groups and working collectively on the project

Forming groups and working collectively on the project
We started to plan our film by forming our individual ideas and putting them together as a group, picking the best parts from each to form a final ideal. We evenly shared the work load around the group so that everyone worked equally to gain the best mark we could. Working in a group was rewarding as it meant we could combine our individual skills and qualities to make our work better but was challenging as sometimes people had really good ideas but they would contrast with another person's.
  • Preliminary Exercise: a filming and editing continuity exercise

Preliminary Exercise: a filming and editing continuity exercise
The prelim exercise introduced us to how to create a sequence which didn't break continuity while filming and editing. As this was our first time creating a film, it really helped to see our practical work come together. It went very well apart from one shot we broke continuity by opening the wrong door. The tracking shot worked really well after a few attempts. We learnt how to plan a shoot and how to work well together as a group. Our OTS doesn't break continuity due to the skills we learnt.
  • Planning our Thriller OTS

    Planning our Thriller OTS
Due to our prelim exercise, we were more technical with our planning and though about mise en scene and editing techniques thoroughly. Although we didn't stick to our planning 100%, it was really useful having the ideas there so we could adjust and interpret them how we wished on the day of filming.
  • Filming our Thriller OTS

    Filming our Thriller OTS
We were now more confident and ambitious in filming due to the preliminary exercise. I am most proud of the flashback scenes as they were difficult to line up perfectly. We used match on action frequently and complied with the 180 degree role as this means the audience don't notice the editing as much, typical of a Thriller. I think our final cut is very successful but next time I would get a few more shots to make it a little longer.
  • Editing our Thriller OTS

    Editing our Thriller OTS
As we had more time to edit our final OTS compared to our prelim exercise, I spent a lot of time perfecting it. I also had more time to focus on the audio. It was easier to edit the footage as the prelim gave me a basic knowledge of editing. I used exponential fades and linear wipes as I had more creative options to use with my developed skills.
  • Summary

    Summary
My knowledge of film making has grown dramatically over the coursework period and I am now much more confident planning, filming and editing. The progression from the preliminary exercise really allowed me to create a much more professional opening title sequence with my developed skills. As the editor, I feel like my knowlefge of editing has also expanded and I am now more comfortable in the edit suite than before.
