    Ancient Greek
    Ancient Greek was a civilization about 2500 years ago. For its time it was probably more sophisticated then most civilization. Until 300 BC war weakened their city and eventually got conquered in 130 BC.

    Roman Empire

    Roman Empire
    The Roman republic expanded, it evolved into the Roman Empire. The first emperor was Augustus who gained that position in 27 B.C. His rule brought order to Rome's vast lands. This period was called the Pax Romana, was a time of peace artistic growth and expanding trade that lasted about 200 years.

     Christianity
    Christianity started in the first century and declared that Jesus was the Messiah. Christianity technically started in 0 AD because that’s when Jesus Christ was born. Christianity is also the biggest religion today.

    Rome's Decline
    Rome's Decline was when Germanic leaders overtook the last Rome emperor and took down Western Roman Empire. Even though that Rome fell it had a huge impact on Europe and the West. It helped by having Christianity and classic culture spread.

    Christian Europe
    During the Middle Ages Christianity had two separate branches of religion. The Roman Catholic was ruled by a pope. The Roman Catholic would spread Roman culture and law to the Germanic groups living in western and central Europe. The Orthodox Church in Byzantine Empire would spread Orthodoxy and Greek and Roman culture to Slavic groups.

    A Germanic king brought much of western Europe together. After his death the empire broke up. There was no strong government to help western Europe .

    The Crusades
    The religion of Islam was founded by Muhammad in 600 AD and spread to southwest Asia to North Africa and parts of Europe. in 700 AD Spain's rulers forced out Muslims and united the country in 1492. while that was happening in 1300s the bubonic plague and Black Death, killed perhaps a third of Europe's population

    The Renaissance
    Europe was healing after Plague in 1350 - 1550. Renaissance is French for rebirth. so they rebuilt the damages that the plague did by killing somewhere in between 75 - 200 million people.This was also the period of time when painting and art in general became popular.

    European Exploration
    As Europe’s kingdoms grew stronger, European voyages lead to a great time for exploration in the 1400s. But the biggest exploration was in 1492 by Christopher Columbus when he tried to take a different route to Asia but accidentally found America.

    The Reformation

    The Reformation
    In 1517 Martin Luther, A German religious leader, set out reform or correct certain church practices. The pope did not accept did not accept Luther's ideas and Luther broke from the Roman Catholic Church. Luther's ideas sparked a religious movement called Reformation. Wars between Roman Catholics and Protestants soon swept through Europe. The Reformation thus shattered the Religious unity of Europeans.
  • The Enlightenment

    The Enlightenment
    Nicolas Copernicus, a polish mathematician, concluded that the sun not the earth is the center of the universe. Galileo Galileli an Italian scientist believed me knowledge can come from measuring natural world. These or other ideas sparked a revolution. As a result the 1700s was known as the Age of Enlightment. John Locke said that everyone should have natural lights. Napoleon was a small man with big ambitions, until several countries united to defeat him in 1815.

    World War 1 originated in Europe in 1914. It was the alliance against the axis powers. On the alliance there were U.S.A, France, and Russia. They were lead by Woodrow Wilson. On the axis powers there was Germany, Austria Hungary, and Bulgaria. The outcome of this war was Alliance won and there was huge political and economical changes.

    The worst part of World War II was the Holocaust a mass killing of 6 million European Jews by Germany’s Nazi rulers like Adolf Hitler.

    The Cold War
    The Cold War was not exactly a war. It was just threats from Russia and the U.S.A threatening to bomb each other. Nobody actually attacked in this war, but the U.S.A spent 8 trillion from 1947 - 1996 making sure that Russia didn't bomb us.
  • Communism

    Communism
    Communism is a system in which the government controls the ways of producing goods. In 1989 people in Eastern Europe forced several Communist governments from power and set up new democracies. A year later, East and West Germany merged to become one democratic state. Then in 1991 the Soviet Union broke apart. Then in 1993 several democracies formed the European Union. The EU allows goods, services and workers to move freely among member countries.
